The castle will be closed from Tues 28 May to Thur 6 June for a combination of private hire and wider maintenance. Last entry is 4.45pm. This near-complete castle was the home of Regent Albany, Scotland's 'uncrowned king'. It was later a royal residence, a dower house for widowed queens and a Jacobite prison. The audio guide is narrated by two actors who have filmed scenes at Doune Castle: Terry Jones, director and star on Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Sam Heughan, star of the hit TV show Outlander. The castle was also a filming location for Game of Thrones.
Legendary castle, but only if you are a fan of Monty Python or Outlander. Especially Monty Python; many scenes from the Holy Grail were recorded there and the audio tour was narrated by Terry Jones. With Holy Grail tidbits, very funny, but also very interesting about the castle itself and the lord. Definitely worth the money! You can also buy coconuts in the shop and there are a lot of swallows flying, I just don't know which species. You can buy tickets in advance, but I don't think it's necessary. Parking is free, nearby, plenty of parking spaces.
I surprised my husband with a visit to Doune Castle today. We're both huge Monty Python fans and several of our favourite scenes were filmed here. There are quite a lot of steps to climb and the grounds outside aren't very level, so just to warn you, if you have mobility issues, you might find it very difficult to get around. The staff in the car park area and in the castle were all very friendly and helpful, which we always appreciate. We did the free audio tour, which was very interesting, so if you want to know more about the history of the castle, I'd recommend doing this. The surroundings of it are beautiful and pleasant to stroll around. If you're a Python fan, or even if you're not, I'd recommend visiting. We really enjoyed our time here.
Exceptional castle. Ticket comes with audio guide narrated by Terry Jones, including tidbits on Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Also some extra Outlander tidbits narrated by the beautifully clean dude in the show (my wife says). Honestly super interesting and well worth the money.
As a decades-long fan of Monty Python, I knew I had to make sure to visit Doune Castle while we were in Scotland. It was the filming site for Monty Python and the Holy Grail's Castle scenes (all of them, just from different angles.) It's since been used for Game of Thrones, Outlander, and other shows. This of course totally fails to mention the tremendous historical significance of the castle itself, which is deep and varied, and I don't want to diminish that at all; I just don't know it. My wife could speak endlessly on that aspect of it. Our family visited recently and we were very impressed with the structure, almost all of which is accessible for exploration. It was amazing to get a glimpse into what it might have been like to sleep in a bed chamber, or use the privy in the wall, or climb the narrow circular stairs to get from one level to the next. The historical society staff were friendly and knowledgeable; all in all a fabulous site to visit. Make sure to buy your tickets in advance because only a limited number of people are allowed in at any one time.
Nice little monument. They have an audio guide with numbers mentioned for different areas of the castle so that one can know a bit of history hidden in every corner. The walk behind the castle in very scenic with a river flowing from there and nice green farms.
This was an amazing self guided tour! Walking through the castle and having the interactive tour with the listening device was well worth it. Giving you the option to learn more about the historical facts, you can choose how to immerse yourself in the experience! There's also a second and complimentary Monty Python tour, and there's Outlander tidbits along the way. Very affordable and you get so much more in value!
