Want to spend some time deep in the delightful Co.Durham countryside? Don't particularly want to have to make a long diversion from the main road to get there? Book yourselves a space at Dragonfly Camping - this splendid spot is part of a working farm surrounded by woodlands, and yet it's no more than 15 minutes' drive from either the A1 or the A19. You'll probably start to notice the peaceful atmosphere as you make your way down the farm track to the camping area. At this point you'll need to make a choice - will you set up in the main field (a popular choice for groups and families because of its open space and proximity to facilities), or among the trees in the Walnut Orchard for more of a secluded wild camping-style experience?
Just spent an evening at Dragonfly with the wonderful Donna Van Senior and it was a superb set-up. I usually wild camp so this was an absolute joy to find a pop-up site that ticks all the wild camp boxes with the luxury of compost loos and shower in the outhouse. The walnut grove is quaint and natural and offers absolute tranquility, so that you can fully immerse in your surroundings and take in the natural flora and fauna. The field area offers idyllic views of the surrounding countryside and a spectacular sunset and sunrise if you're lucky with the weather, which we were. Fire pits available and logs are bought from Matt and his brother who run the site. Matt was super friendly and a great host, filling us in on how to get to the local pubs and amenities and also put us on to the local pizza shop that delivered after I burnt the burgers! I honestly can't recommend this place enough. An absolutely wonderful experience and I can't wait to book again.
8 of us camped there from Thursday to Sunday, all arriving over 5 cars and over two days. The facilities are great, with a toilet and shower block and also a compost toilet at the other end of the site. There were a few fire pits to borrow, and they just ask that oh buy wood from them. The site is located a short drive from plenty of shops and a beach, the road down is a little bumpy but nothing too difficult to manage. There were a few horses about on the farm, and a couple of cockerels who joined us for the weekend. They do crow in the morning but it didn't really bother us. There are two fields to camp in and also a few plots in a wooded area which is great for privacy and I imagine would be a more peaceful spot too. The owner was a good laugh, really friendly and helpful, helped us fix our tent and gave a great local pub recommendation.
I spent a lovely night at dragonfly. Matt gave me the brief tour and pointed out the start of a circular walk. The walk was lovely... boots are best for the first steep bit... unspoiled countryside, woodland and meadow. The site was quiet and peaceful with pretty views and the orchard is lovely to roam around. Eco loo was clean, sink is handy and fire pits are a nice touch. This camp site is perfect for the wild camper who wants to escape to the countryside but with the convenience of a loo. Thanks Matt and Ben, I'll be back soon
Wonderful weekend at Dragonfly Camping, the owner was so helpful and attentive, popping round to deliver logs to anyone who wanted them to build a fire. He even helped us get ours going after we were struggling. The compost toilets are a great addition, and the main toilet facilites are really nice too, we had a lovely weekend and will absolutely be back. Great price and plenty of room for everyone to pitch up, there were quite a few other people staying at the same time as us but we could camp plenty of distance apart. Thankyou so much! Like someone else mentioned, be prepared for the farm track on the way to the site, its quite steep, but my Audi A1 managed just fine, and there were others on site with vans who clearly made it just fine too. Theres also a lovely farm shop around the corner that you absolutely cant miss!
