Dromore Motte and Bailey is a medieval motte-and-bailey castle located in County Down, Northern Ireland. The castle features a large earthen mound, or motte, surrounded by a wooden palisade and a moat, with a smaller inner courtyard, or bailey, at its center. The motte is approximately 80 feet in diameter and 30 feet high, making it one of the largest in Ireland. The bailey is surrounded by a 10-foot-high earthen bank and a wooden fence. The site also features a number of ancient earthworks, including a ringfort and a series of linear ditches.
Interesting mound a short walk from centre of Dromore. Free to enter. Great views from the top but the walk up was very muddy when we visited. Has a bin but sadly no information about out the history of the motte and bailey which would be interesting. Definitely worth visiting if in the area.
Very interesting earthworks still in good condition today. Information provided could do with a bit of a clean up
Very well defined Classic Motte and Bailey design. Strategically sited on a bend of the Lagan river and overlooking the old town of Dromore. Some nice views across the County Down countryside
This should be promoted so much better by the ABC council. It's historical importance is underrated and there is no public carpark provision. The views from it are outstanding and you really should give it a visit. Even if you have to park on the roadside.
In my opinion this is the best motte and baillie in NI. Meant to give it 4 stars!
We live quarter of a mile from it and go there regularly with the dog. A historic site that sits atop dromore, fun with the kids and for a picnic!
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
