Discover one of Scotland's hidden treasures. Perched atop a 160 foot rock and surrounded on three sides by the North Sea, these dramatic and evocative cliff-top ruins were once an impregnable fortress of the Earls Marischal, once one of the most powerful families in Scotland. Steeped in history, this romantic and haunting ruin is a photographer's paradise, a history lover's dream and an iconic tourist destination for visitors the world over.
A very good attraction that you should not miss visiting Aberdeen. They say it takes an hour. But it took 2.5 hrs for us to fully explore the castle and take pics. Also you could go to the cliff that is next to this island peak and also go down to visit the shore. It was an amazing experience on the whole.
One of the places that should not be missed during a visit to the area is the legendary castle with its breathtaking landscape. However, it is advisable to carry something warm, as the wind from the North Sea can be quite chilly.
If I was a kid, I would have LOVED to play hide and seek here! You can walk all around these grounds with many rooms to explore. The views are breathtaking! The walk to the castle is not for folks with any mobility issues. I would recommend at least 2 hours to walk the grounds and explore the nearby paths that overlook the sea and go down to the rocky beach.
A beautiful place to visit- we reached there via a coastal path from Stonehaven. An easy hike- it was very rewarding where we were able to visit the inside of the castle. Was very popular with good reason as there were so many people.
We had a lovely time at the castle ruins and enjoyed the view both from the surroundings and from the castle. There are quite a bit of stairs, so not a great fit for a wheelchair or folks with trouble walking. There is a rocky beach and a cave as well. Toilets are available at the castle yard. There was food available by the parking lot, burgers were great and the hot dogs are huge and great as well
Amazing views! The castle tickets are not super expensive, but even if you don't want to visit the castle, there's plenty of hiking around the area. The parking is free, but a bit crowded. Although, it seems that people come and go fairly regularly so finding a spot shouldn't be hard. If you do visit the castle, no need to purchase tickets ahead of time. Plenty of space for little ones to run around. Most steps are either steep or bumpy, so use caution. For me, the hikes are the main selling point. Beautiful scenery no matter where you go--whether you're up on the hillside or down by the beach. Be sure you spend 3-5hrs to fully explore the area. Most hiking paths should be ok for little ones, but just be careful of some cliffs without a fence.
On-site services
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
