Last entry 4pm. From the rugged battlements of this strategically sited castle you can see how it once dominated Loch Etive. Outside the ramparts lie a ruined chapel, well-kept grounds and pebbly beaches with views to Mull, Lismore and Morvern. Built by Duncan MacDougall in the 1200s, the castle was captured by Robert the Bruce in 1308. Flora MacDonald was imprisoned here after helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape Scotland.
Visited this area but never made it to the castle before now. After parking in the free car park, you take a short walk along the shoreline to the castle. There are some steep steps to gain entry to the castle, but once inside, you can walk around and read signs in particular areas explaining what was there. Take the steps up to the ramparts for some stunning views. Well worth a visit. After the castle take a stroll through the woods to the chapel ruins.
A castle in an original state since it was never destroyed and rebuilt. There is no exhibits. It is a real castle you can enjoy. All areas are accessible (except the well!). The ticket price VERY reasonable. The gift shop is so cute. Parking is a short walk away. It is peaceful since tourists don't seem to know about it.
Great castle if mostly in ruins. One building is restored and great to view. You can walk the walls and historical plaques are informative (English only). Some parking is available. Tickets are about 10$
Great castle to go exploring, kid friendly too. This is nice castle to see the building techniques used back in the day. Make sure you look at the base of the castle and look up from there. Inside, there's rooms to explore and some science to be had. Some hands on kid-learning with blocks and arches. Building stronger structures for sure. Don't forget the Chapel out back. The ruins are very interesting.
I didn't go inside because it isn't accessible but I enjoyed the view. There is a main parking lot but further down there is accessible parking. There are paths that do to the water's edge with views The ground can be uneven around the castle.
It's nice view but not worth PS7.5 per adult and PS4 per child which too much for outdoor and damaged castle I'll suggest just charge PS2 per person can make more money.
On-site services
Wheelchair-accessible car park
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Good for kids
