A vast expanse of mudflats and saltmarshes stretching along the coast of Essex, East Mersea Flats is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers. The area is a key stopover point for thousands of migratory birds, including avocets, ringed plovers, and redshanks, which can be spotted roaming the flats and feasting on the rich array of invertebrates. The flats themselves are a fascinating landscape of twisting creeks, sandy ridges, and vast expanses of mud, constantly shifting with the tides. As the water recedes, it reveals a treasure trove of interesting rocks, shells, and other beachcombing treasures. The surrounding saltmarshes, with their tangle of cordgrass and sea purslane, provide a unique habitat for a range of plants and animals adapted to the harsh, salty conditions.
Had a lovely walk, the information signs are an added interest to the area, it is lovely and clean and there was an abundance of Ducks! We've been coming here for over 40 years but haven't lived here all that time, in fact my Son was visiting from Canada and remembers Swimming off the Beach as a Child. We were so pleased to see it kept so well, there was no litter or Plastic in sight! Thank You to all those involved!
Enjoyed this adventure on the very tip of East Mersea Island. If you're in the area, you should pay a visit, go early.
Very beautiful and quiet nature for a weekend escape from London.
Not disability friendly. Stunning natural area, established footpaths, some seating but not much and no shade or hospitality, but this is a nature reserve so... go prepared, and enjoy the stunning views.
A peaceful place to get away from it all. Just be mindful of the tides if you stray from the raised path!
Nice, peaceful place for a long walk or perhaps a bike ride. Get there early however as there appears to be just the one very small car park nearby.
Good for kids
Dogs allowed
