Last entry 5pm. Tickets often sell out far in advance, especially over the summer months. Book your tickets online in advance for the best price and to guarantee entry. A mighty fortress, the defender of the nation and a world-famous visitor attraction that has dominated the skyline for centuries. The castle's powerful stone walls have endured many sieges and its sumptuous apartments were an important residence of Scottish kings and queens.
A stunningly beautiful castle making it very popular & extremely busy. Parking is pricey & you have a decent walk to get to the castle but it does allow you to see some of the surrounding sights. You need to book tickets in advance without fail. One American couple got turned away when we were arriving & there were no slots left. If you can't pre-book for any reason & can't get in, then I recommend Stirling Castle which was built to rival Edinburgh & wasn't AS busy & is around 30 miles away
Well-preserved, iron-age, castle in the heart of the city. Take your time visiting each part of the castle to learn it's function and history. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Buy your tickets in advance or you might not be able to visit. During the month of August, the castle esplanade is used for the Military Tattoo (which I also recommend). August is a busy month for tourism, so plan early.
Must stop if coming to Edinburgh. Lots of history and staff are helpful and friendly. Views from the castle are amazing. If coming as a family with any child over 16 please remember your Historical Society family pass will NOT cover the children over 16. Its a nice place to visit.
A bit overhyped. It does NOT look as impressive on the inside as on the outside. However, I didn't get to see the jewels because apparently, there was a huge line. I loved the views and the chapel, though. The Museum of War freaked me out for some reason... Maybe because there were military and nurse uniforms from the two World Wars that still had blood on them... The prison is creepy, too. And the gift shop is filled with your usual souvenirs for tourists of unreasonable quality and even less reasonable prices. The local soap seems cool, though. I recommend buying tickets in advance on the website because there are always no tickets left for today, not on the website nor at the ticket office. I also advise to donate something to the chapel.
Amazing few hours. So much information available and artefacts to see. History lesson that was interactive and fun. Crown jewels were nice too. The 1pm cannon shot was a spectacle to see for sure. The views were amazing and we got sunshine for the bonus point. The memorial to fallen service men and women was both solemn and grand, I took a moment in the quiet to reflect on the magnitude of war and the sacrifices made by so many. Leaving this area and out to the sunshine to the stunning views was welcomed. There was whiskey tasting available and a shop to purchase. Edinburgh castle is an absolute must see for visitors. I would advise booking in advance as they were sold out that day as I saw people being turned away at the gates. We entered at 11am, I would recommend this or earlier if you can get it as when we were leaving at 2pm, it was very very busy.
Definitely worth a visit while in Edinburgh! I went mid day and the Castle was already very busy! I recommend going early and allotting at least a couple of hours to get around all the places around the castle including the museums, prisons, and Crown Jewels. It might be worth it to go to the very top to see the Crown Jewels first to avoid the long line. Great views of the city from up here!
