Elephant Trees are a unique natural wonder in the United Kingdom, characterized by their twisted, elephant-like branches that have grown in a way that resembles the wrinkled skin of an elephant. These trees are actually ancient yews, some of which are estimated to be over 2,000 years old, with gnarled and contorted trunks that have been shaped by centuries of wind and weather. The trees are typically found in the churchyards and countryside of England, Wales, and Scotland, where they have been preserved and protected for generations.
Walking weardale way so peacfulspart from the grouse, stunning views, going back when heather is out will be amazing
A lovely walk, I'm Weardale born and bred and the elephant trees are very precious to us here, we walked the track from Wears bank, it's hilly and stony at times but well worth it for the views when you get there, it was a sunny evening when we did it so haven't yet been in adverse weather conditions although I know many have. Just make sure to wear appropriate clothing in the snow/rain.
Lovely picture of the elephant trees Reminds me of my childhood when my grandfather took me out for a walk and first showed me the elephant trees in the distance! Those trees remind me of him now he has gone!
Nice place to stop with good views on the weardale way.
Walked to the trees and back from Stanhope. Steep gradients but mainly tarmac
Great walk. Little dissapointing that you can't actually sit among the trees for your lunch.
