About
Last entry 3.30pm. Enjoy some peace among the magnificent ruins of this sacred place, which dates to the 1200s. Admire the glorious west front, the sumptuous decorations and the atmospheric chapter house. Discover the cathedral's remarkable carved stone collection on display in the towers, including the colourfully lit effigy of Bishop Archibald, and enjoy spectacular rooftop views. The Early of Buchan burned the cathedral in 1390, and during the ferment leading to the Protestant Reformation of 1560 it was the scene of a violent attack.

Lovely and a perfect location if you enjoy exploring historic ruins. The welcome centre is small but the staff are lovely and the selection of gift shop items are true to the location; lovely crafted items as well as things for kids. All through the location there are informational plaques and an interactive section which brings to life the colours of the past. All round worth the PS10 admission fee for adults. Sadly not wheelchair or disabled friendly.
Visited the cathedral at Elgin, and I had a wonderful time walking around the ruins. Very friendly informative staff full of knowledge. Towers are open to climb with displays of masonry on each floor. A number spiral stairs to climb. May present difficulties for disabled access. The grounds are flat with a magnificent Chapter house dating back to 1200's. Picnic area avalible at the back of the grave yard behind the altar. Would highly recommend a visit the staff were lovely.
Lovely afternoon at the cathedral. Lovely staff. The kids had fun looking for headstone marks and designs on a wee treasure hunt. The history behind it is really interesting. There is conservation work on going to replace bits of stonework. The toilets were really clean.
It was a surprise how much the whole family enjoyed this cathedral, even in the pouring rain. The architecture is amazing, and the ruins well preserved. You must go up the towers to visit the amazing displays of preserved stonework. The artwork and craftsmanship are stunning. Then go up onto the top to see breathtaking views. The staff was super friendly and helpful as well.
Beautiful buildings, unfortunately shut when I was there but could still see but couldn't explore, next to it was the biblical garden well worth a visit.
This has to be one of the best presented monuments I have visited anywhere. So much history cared for by friendly and knowledgeable staff. I would highly recommend a visit and taking time to absorb the atmosphere. Very memorable!
