Elvaston Castle Country Park was opened to the public in 1970, as one of the first country parks in England. It comprises about 325 acres of woodlands, formal gardens, a Nature Reserve, grade II* listed buildings and lawns, a lake, bridleways, children's play area, and a large pay and display car park.
Nice place for a walk around. The 'castle' itself is impressive, you can tell it used to be a grand estate, even though it's definitely seen better days. But the grounds are vast, so it's great to have a wonder around the gardens and huge trees.
We only spent an hour or so walking around before the outdoor cinema, so definitely haven't seen it all but it's such a gorgeous place. Lots of areas to sit and have a picnic or just a chill. Very tidy & well looked after. It's free to go around but you do have to pay for parking - worth it though! There is a shop and cafe as well, I believe, but we came quite late in the day so didn't go in either. We will absolutely be visiting again though.
Personally think Elvaston Castle is one of the best parks in Derby. I've been coming here ever since I was child and there's always somewhere / something to do here. Lovely walks around the park with woodlands to admire and open spaces for dog walkers etc. Parking ranges from PS2.50 for two hours but you can park just outside the park for free if you get there early enough!
Elvaston Castle and Country Park is a lovely place to visit. It is a terrible shame, though, that Derbyshire County Council has not kept up the upkeep of the actual Castle it's self and kept it open to the public. There was a nice craft fair on when I visited, and the rooms they used downstairs for the stalls looked fascinating. The place must be full of lots of rich and wonderful history. The grounds themselves are very nice, with various buildings such as a boat house, stables, church etc and a lake are good to explore. There are also nice wooded areas. There is a good childrens play area. A lovely cafe, also set within the castle building, reasonably priced with very good quality food - especially the sausages. They have alternative milk products, such as oat milk, for people with intolerances. I also noticed that there were plenty of toilet facilities around the castle area itself. The ground for walking around is uneven in places due to tree roots and cobbled areas, which may cause some problems with wheelchair users. There is a small gift shop, again very reasonably priced. Although there is plenty of parking, some of the pay and display meters were not working, and having spoken to other visitors, this is quite a regular occurrence. Parking for a full day is PS7. There is an ice cream van parked on carpark.
We love visiting elvaston castle, lovely walk round the nature reserve connected to it. lots of space to play or picnic as well as the lovely wyatts tea rooms in the castle for refreshments too
Nice walking venue, lovely gardens spoilt a bit by youngsters on bikes, and today also a moped, who clearly can not read the signs. Also a plea to dog owners .... please clean up after your dogs. Far too much mess on the pathways.
