Ruins of a 12th-century monastery & 14th-century gatehouse in a grassy complex with free admission.
Absolutely beautiful ruins. Worth a visit just for the photoshoot of your dog! Huge open spaces that feel very safe and enclosed so dog walkers should feel very happy. We ate a picnic in the old chapter house - please make sure to take rubbish with you as some inconsiderate people had left theirs behind! but the daisies flowering everywhere lent this place a magical quality and the information boards were very interesting. The parking is free and there's no cost to enter. If you're not from the area, it is down a random back road and you'll feel like you're going into an odd turning but then it just appears! Lovely couple of hours spent wandering around.
Beautiful old ruins, lots of interesting lithophytes growing in the rocks. Park on the opposite side of the road in the shopping area and go under the road via the little tunnel. Free entry.
Very interesting and a good place to visit and have a look around. It could do with more signage around to explain to you what different areas are and perhaps more of a visual representation. I gave 3 stars due to there being liquor bottles and beer bottles smashed everywhere, and rubbish littered all over the place. Also it was full of screaming kids climbing all over the ruins and pulling bits off it whilst their low IQ parents sit on their phones. It's such a shame really, more needs to be done to prevent the area being a hangout for drunks and druggies, and to stop moronic children and their parents from damaging the ruins.
For me this site of ruins was great to explore. Not much interpretation, just a few boards and labels in some rooms saying cellar etc. Mainly you need your imagination and good weather to enjoy these. They cover an extensive area, There is a free car park, but no other facilities on site. You can walk into Thetford though for such things.
This is a free entry English heritage site . It is a large site with an interesting and sinister history there were several murders on this site and it was also one of the last priorys in England to be suppressed by Henry VII because it was under the protection of the Duke of Norfolk who was a powerful and respected man . Wonderful quiet site to walk on your own with family or walk your dog around , plenty to see and lots of information boards scattered about the site . Well worth a visit if you are in or near Thetford ,
This was a real surprise! I wasn't expecting it to be so big. A marvellous ruin to walk round. And the nearby car park was free! Added bonus.
