Eskdale Mill is the oldest working water corn mill in the Lake District National Park. Find out how oats, barley and wheat was produced and milled in Boot village and the Eskdale valley from 1500's until 1930's using only the power of water. A truly remarkable step back in time, the mill hosts a complex of intimate Grade II* listed buildings complete with original waterwheels and water-powered machinery. Other features include the modern hydro-electric wheel, interactive exhibitions and self guided tours for people of all ages and abilities. Set within a small woodland area next to Whillan Beck this is a relaxing, interesting and fun environment for all the family. The complex includes scenic picnic areas, gardens and a small gift shop.
We went here after our muncaster castle visit which was messed up by rain though the forecast was supposed to be sunny. When we exactly left the castle to rush in here before 4 pm, the sun came out bright and nice. It's a wonderful experience with loads of history and the kids liked it very much. A simple place with brilliant machinery in its time. Sustainable and clean!
This is a beautiful water mill, it has been restored fantastically. Just a short walk from the Eskdale Dalegarth station.
Not very large but extremely interesting to see a working water mill. Staff helpful and knowledgeable. There are inside and outside areas of working machinery. You can take your dog round inside which is a bonus. Not really suitable for wheelchair due to stone steps and narrow doorways. No on site parking.
Very nice staff and enthusiastic too. We had a lovely visit despite the rain. I'm sure we'd have stayed longer if the weather had been sunny as there are lots of places to sit outside.
A very interesting mill with great interpretation and friendly staff. The information is well presented and clear, and I loved the audio/visual parts. So cool to see a working mill and we loved the hydro electric feature!!! What a great idea! The staff with helpful and knowledgeable.
Exceeded my expectations. Small but beautiful place with an outstanding amount of history behind it and all wonderfully displayed. And so lovely to see it all in working order and the effort put in by the staff and volunteers to raise funds to keep this place alive.
