Eskrigg Reserve is a nature reserve located in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, North Yorkshire, England. The reserve features a mix of woodland, grassland, and heather moorland, with scenic views of the surrounding countryside. It is home to a variety of wildlife, including red grouse, curlew, and lapwing, as well as a range of plant species, including bluebells, wild garlic, and bilberry. The reserve has several walking trails, including the Eskrigg Trail, which offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Visitors can also explore the reserve's many hidden gems, including ancient settlements, old mine workings, and historic boundary stones.
A quaint reserve with an abundance of wildlife, including red squirrels! There are two main hides, one of which overlooks the pond featuring waterfowl and a red squirrel hide, which attracts numerous garden birds and squirrels. On our Sunday visit, Eskrigg had some traffic, but overall, it was quite a quiet reserve! A nice day out for visitors from both far and close.
Eskrigg nature reserve is a fantastic hidden gem at entrance to lockerbie from the Dumfries side on the left, it has amazing plants , wildlife ,and nature trails. Plus has squirrel and bird hides which we have been lucky to see several times. There is also the main information centre that is also a huge looking onto a large lake that has loads of bird species to watch and the centre has a vast amount of leaflets ,posters ,binders, and collections of local fungi etc that you can pick up. It gas maps for the amazing forest walks located afew hundred yards from the centre which are well kept and beautiful all year round . There is also a toilet if you need to go as it is pretty out the way ,there is a medium sized car park at the end of a bumpy farm track. Love this place
Lovely little quiet nature spot. Has seen a bit development of late by the looks. Needs some better signage for the walking routes. Lovely for a wander
Great place to go for a walk. The paths are decent. There's plenty of hides (though these were locked when we were there on an evening). Lots of different paths you can walk on, which loop back round, and a map as you walk into the reserve on the board. Car park is free. We even saw a couple of red squirrels.
A well kept reserve with a good variety of species of birds. Busier as the day goes on so if you are after some peaceful birding an earlier visit will probably be in order (like most places). Also keep your eyes peeled for red squirrel in amongst the woodland walks.
Fantastic example of how a nature reserve should be. Clearly lots of care, innovation and teamwork have gone into creating and managing Eskrigg nature reserve. Absolutely lovely to see so much wildlife and a great stop for a walk.
