Exmoor Zoo began back in 1993 with 2 staff and 10,000 visitors and has consistently grown every year since. Trees and shrubs growing today were planted back in 1994 and 95, using the central naturally fed spring lake as a focal point. Today 45,000+ people visit us annually.
I liked it because it wasn't over a massive area where you get too tired of all the walking. But the enclosures for the animals were more than adequate for their needs. The whole zoo was neat, tidy, and well looked after, and the staff were always busy but very polite and attentive if you needed help or any info.
Had an amazing day here. We arrived just before midday and left just before it closed. We were a family group of 4 adults and 2 children (ages 6 and 12). We found the zoo very user friendly with lots of information about each animal on their enclosures. All the enclosures have been well thought out, nice and large with lots of natural foliage for animals to hide away from the public and the sun if they want. We walked round twice and were lucky to see all the animals. We also listened to the talks done by the staff - usually when the animals were being fed- which meant they stayed in view for longer. We did not eat in the cafe but did use the outside stall for snacks, coffee and delicious hot chocolate. My favourite things were the Cheetahs, feeding of the spotted leopard and the wolverines. All in all a fantastic day, would definitely come again as they are adding new enclosures and animals for 2024/25.
Excellent zoo. Beautiful setting. Some unusual animals such as dingos, bush dogs, painted dogs, Exmoor Beast! Lots of picnic benches. Helpful staff and sign posts. Great day out.
We visited the zoo as a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children. (A nearly 2 year old and a nearly 3 year old) This is a large zoo with some sloped paths. The animal enclosures were of a good size and the animals looked well looked after. There is a nice park area with a trampoline. The cafe and kiosk were both close to the entrance along with the toilets - if you have issues with needing the toilet urgently, this is a problem if you are at the bottom of the park as there are only toilets situated at the top - this is due to plumbing issues having toilets at the bottom of the park. Cafe and kiosk were expensive and PS5 minimum spend on card. I personally felt it was quite expensive to get in. It was nice to see the cheetah being fed and there are plenty of talks going on through the day. It is an any weather attraction, but dress appropriately for the weather, especially with winds and rain.
Nice zoo with plenty of animals you don't normally see in a zoo. Managed to cover the whole zoo in roughly 2 hours. Staff were nice and helpful. Food was pretty good from the cafe. Worth a visit if you're in the area, but buy a ticket the night before so you can save yourself some money. Could be very tricky to navigate if you're disabled due to it being built on a slope, like 90% of North Devon.
We visited on August 24th. My Grandson was Zoo Keeper for the day. He had an amazing day, looked after by Keeper Alex. Dad and Grandparents observed and also had a great time. Such a lovely Zoo with beautiful animals. All the staff were friendly and helpfull. Keeper for the day is the perfect gift for any youngster over 8yrs. 100% recommended. Thank you Exmoor Zoo.
