The Ferens Art Gallery is located in Hull City Centre and is home to a magnificent collection of paintings and sculptures, including works by European Old Masters, portraiture, marine painting, and modern and contemporary British art. Fully accessible, the exhibits focus on women's invisible labor, the shackles and lies of patriarchy, the struggles of sexual minorities and transgender people, exposing the true moral of "The Song of the Sirens," which is "what would happen to patriarchal societies if women were more empowered and had the courage to speak out," with an additional question at the end for everyone to reflect on. It is recommended that art museums around the world follow suit!
A really good art gallery, which is well worth a visit. Good collections of artworks representing all the major artistic periods from the Renaissance to Modern. The individual galleries are well laid out, with comfortable seating to rest and contemplate. It's free to visit, too.
Ferens Art Gallery is free admission and sited quite centrally, less than a 10 minute walk from the station and close to main shopping areas, City Hall, the ruins of Beverley Gate and also the Maritime Museum. Like any Art Gallery it is full of traditional art work from near and far; my preference however is always to look at the various temporary exhibitions. On my visit today I enjoyed the Tomorrow exhibition and especially the Young Artist Open exhibition which I visit every year. There is so much young local talent in that one space! These exhibitions finish on 1st October so watch their social media for details of what's coming up, including a Canelletto exhibition. Good toilet facilities and an excellent cafe plus gift shop. Well worth a visit! Update: Popped in today as I knew there was a new exhibition in place: Are we there yet? Very colourful and fascinating; children will love this!
A great gallery, my family and I have been visiting for years. It's lovely and spacious and always has a nice atmosphere. Staff and volunteers are always really friendly. There are different exhibitions frequently alongside the 'regulars' that we know and love, some beautiful pieces!
