Heritage railway offering old-school steam engine tours through Snowdonia National Park.
Great little station that can lead you into the heart of Snowdonia. Nice small town that is nestled below the slate quarries. Great place to visit if you like hill/mountain climbing. Also good if you want to explore the abandoned slate quarries above the town. A visit to The Tanygrisiau Reservoir is good, you can visit a small cafe were you can have some nice food, have a drink and enjoy the views of the lake and surrounding countryside. This place is definitely worth a visit.
Excellent day out 1 1/2 hours up, about 3/4 of an hour to look around Blaenau Ffestiniog. We went up on the standard ticket, then paid an extremely PS10 each to come back in 1st class Well worth a visit, next time we ate up this way, we intend to try out the other route.
During a weeklong tour of Wales we had pre booked the Slate Mine train from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog. its a narrow gauge railway and shares the station with the main line trains but runs along a different route to Porthmadog mostly downhill, the train runs all the way to Caernarfon but we didn't have sufficient time to travel any further than Porthmadog. We were very fortunate as a off duty staff member of the Slate Railway got on the train at the first stop to join his friends (sat next to us) and proceeded to tell all them (and anyone in earshot) about the railway's history, view points along the route etc. There are a number of information boards at Porthmadog which covers some of the info we had heard on the train. The round trip was nearly five hours as the return leg is all uphill and the coke was not burning hot enough to generate sufficient steam so a couple of unplanned stops were need to get back to full steam. The views are great from the train and Porthmadog was a great place to wander around. Nest time we'll make time for the trip to Caernarfon. Parking at the station is limited so need to arrive early to get a space. There are a few shops etc in the local town.
Had a great train ride to Porthmadog...was like looking at Wales from the inside..was great to be able to take our dog with us...there was a good selection from the buffet car all served to your seat..all that was missing was some benches to sit on at Ffestiniog platform.
A fantastic way to spend the day travelling on the old steam railways down too Porthmadog. Great staff, fantastic souvenirs and nice walk around the town and shops of Porthmadog.
A brilliant place to visit, and a wonderful ride down the hill to Portmadog.
