The Ffestiniog Railway is a narrow-gauge railway that runs from the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog to the coastal town of Porthmadog in northwest Wales. The railway is a significant piece of industrial heritage, having been built in 1836 to transport slate from the mines to the coast for export. Today, it operates as a tourist attraction, offering scenic rides through the Snowdonia National Park, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The railway is notable for its well-preserved historic locomotives and carriages, which have been restored to their former glory.
Great experience! The kids love it! You can take a snack with you, as in the train there are not so many choices
Really out of the way request stop. About an hour's moderate hike from Tan-y-bwlch or ask the train to halt and hike back. Really nothing else around and no facilities, no crowds, no noise, perfect.
Volunteered here with Imperial College Rail and Transport Society putting a wooden border/gravel around the memorial stone which you'll see as you go around the spiral. Great history and knowledgeable enthusiastic people running the railway, well worth a visit
Deserted mountain train stop. Visited on walk around the valley.
Fantastic little station in the middle of nowhere. There's not even a road to it. You have to either use the train, or a rambling public footpath. The scenery around is simply beautiful.
The awalk up through the temporate rain forest from Rhyd-y-sarn. Was wonderful. We had a 3 year old with us and got to the station just as the train arrived and did it's lap of the hill.
Good for kids
