This medieval fortress stands on a rocky outcrop above the River Dee, its ruins evoking a sense of history and power. The castle's architecture is a mix of medieval and 17th-century styles, with towers, battlements, and curtain walls. The most impressive feature is the imposing keep, which dates back to the 13th century. The castle's strategic location allowed it to control the Dee Estuary and the surrounding countryside, making it a vital stronghold during the Middle Ages. Today, visitors can explore the castle's remains, taking in the stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
We've never been here before and must say that it was great to such a historic building so well cared for. The views over the River Dee to the Wirral were fabulous. Within 1min walking distance (and visible from the castle), we discovered a unique war memorial, in which a wooden soldier reads a letter from a mother and father sent to them during the First World War.
Free parking and a lovely walk around the ruins of the castle (which is also free to visit). Good to spend about an hour here walking around the castle and along the seafront. The weather was good today, which always makes a visit here much more pleasant. One of the towers is now open and you can go up quite far. Yes, all-in-all a decent, enjoyable visit. We linked this visit with the Lime Kilns nearby and made it a very cheap, enjoyable day.
