Flounders' Folly is a 12-meter-tall folly tower built in 1757 in the Shropshire hills, England. Designed by architect William Baker, it features a mix of Gothic and Romanesque styles, with a square base, octagonal drum, and a tapering spire. The tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and is surrounded by woodland, making it a picturesque and tranquil spot.
A lovely walk up to the folly on a glorious day. The folly was open with a volunteer giving information and history. Very Interesting but the surrounding paths were very overgrown. We couldn't find the trig point.
A nice Folly with two approach paths, one very wild and not well kept, the other nice through the wood, a little steep but worth the climb. Very disappointed that the folly wasn't open when we arrived, but a couple of ladies appeared to be given a private view !! Enthusiastically they told us what great views were to be had from the tower, but alas no offer to share with us. Felt like a poor show really, especially with the tourist sign proclaiming the tower is for all to enjoy.
Parked at the bottom of the folly, and took the easier way up, really not steep at all (if you're worried). Walked back down over the path at the front of the tower, for a bit of variety. Steep in parts, but ends up on the road, where you you turn right to return to the car park at the base of the folly. Fantastic views.
Lovely up here! Recommend getting up here for sunrise! Allow 30min to climb from the road, very slippery and wet. Or, borrow a horse! if we weren't in a rush to leave for home today, I'd plan a long walking route after this at sunrise.
Was not open when i visited but i wasn't expecting it to be as you can check online and theres also a board at the bottom with the opening times for 2022 on it. Only reason its not 5 stars is because its open so little. It would be nice for it to be open on saturdays when most people are out and about on days out and etc. However it is a very nice walk up and around the area. Nice and quiet.
Have passed this tower on the hill many times traveling the A49 so was pleased to see it is open to visitors roughly once a month. It's a steady climb up a smooth track for the first 700 yards then levels out to the tower. Great views from the top to many surrounding peaks. From the Malvern's,, to the Wrekin, Brown Clee and Cadet Idris. Interesting life story of the owner Benjamin Flounders. Look out for when the flag is flying as this shows the folly is open. Well done to all those involved in the restoration and the volunteers for opening the folly up for the public. Well worth a visit.
