A 19th-century lead ore mine situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park, Force Crag Mine features a labyrinth of underground tunnels and caverns that showcase the region's rich mining heritage. Visitors can explore the mine's depths, discovering remnants of old machinery, abandoned mining equipment, and even ancient fossils embedded in the walls. The mine's unique geology has created a stunning array of crystalline formations, including towering quartz crystals and glittering galena deposits. As visitors make their way through the mine, they'll uncover the stories of the miners who toiled beneath the earth, extracting valuable minerals from the rugged Cumbrian landscape.
Great place to see with the naked eye. Great pathway leading straight to the mine. Perfect for all level of fitness. Only about 45-60 min walk to this lovely area from coledale or Braithwaite parking areas. Go early to secure a parking space. Enjoy. [P]
Beautiful walk to this mine. It was a 2 hour round trip. But ridiculously stunning walk through the mountains from Bassenthwaite
Nice walk about an hour from the car park. Easy enough gravel path. The mine itself isn't massive but it's very interesting to visit
Interesting. Almost a 2 mile walk from Braithwaite, along a good level track, to the remains of the last working metal mine in the Lake District. It finished working in 1991 but the buildings have been restored by the National Trust and they do have occasional "open days". The old workings are very dangerous though, so the advice is don't go into any of the adits without a professional guide.
An interesting walk through Coledale from Braithwaite to the mine. There is a small car park at the start of the walk & at weekends the school car park in Braithwaite can be used as well. The mine buildings are locked but there is a description of the history of the mine. Check the National Trust website for open days when you can have guided tour of the few buildings. The walk up & back down Coledale gives fine views of the surrounding fells.
Easy walk with stunning views! We've parked I'm a small car park, and walked follieong the path. Despite we got caught out by the rain - the views are very impressive. The buildings are protected with the padlocks and cctv cameras.
