We weren't really sure what to expect from Forest Holidays Cropton because of the mixed reviews but we felt it worth a try as it's really hard to find anywhere decent which takes three dogs. We were pleasantly surprised. The cabin needed a bit of an update in the kitchen but was of a very good standard. It was also quite clean apart from some very high up cobwebs which had clearly been there for a long time. The only downside was that the floor was still wet and smelled so much of bleach that the smell made you dizzy. No idea why this was as people check out by 10am on Friday and you don't check in until after 4pm on a Monday so why is the floor so last minute?||The hot tub was clean when we arrived and was checked daily. The decking however was filthy, in need of a good varnish and covered in tree debris. Also, despite having nearly the whole of Friday and Monday plus a weekend, we had a visit from maintenance people on the Wednesday, asking if they could replace the steps between the two decks... this was disruptive but you couldn't really say no in reality. Unfortunately, the maintenance people did not re-cover up the hole left under the decking and did not say so one of our dogs go out. Fortunately, this was our eldest dog so he didn't go far and came back immediately when called. This could have been devastating to a family if they'd lost their dog and not the dog safe decking promised.||The food in the cafe was also painfully slow and not that good quality.||The forest was beautiful and provided plenty of opportunities for relaxing walks. Everywhere was well kept and litter free.||I would potentially go to another Forest Holidays but probably a different site
Forest Holidays Cropton is a beautiful site, with friendly, welcoming staff and stunning accommodation. The location is borderline idyllic, and there is lots to do and see in the local area.||Our stay started off with amazing news, with a call the day we were due to arrive offering us an upgrade to a better available cabin. We, of course, accepted, and we were delighted with this news! ||When we arrived, check-in was smooth, the staff lovely and the process very simple. The cabin was fantastic, significantly better than the sorts of static caravans, etc, that would have inhabited parks like this in the past. It was cleaned to an exceptionally high standard. I jokingly said to my fiance that I would have been content to eat dinner off of the bathroom floor that evening! We later heard staff proudly telling other guests "oh that cabin is one of the ones I look after". This is great, the ownership and pride they clearly had for the work was lovely, added to the experience and clearly added to the sense of satisfaction they have at work which is appreciated.||Throughout our stay, the hot tub on the deck was chemically rebalanced in the morning by a member of staff. This kept it clean and clear, but they didn't overdo it so we ended up with bromine induced skin issues! This level of attentiveness was welcome.||There are however places where there is room for improvement. I should caveat this by saying we felt the staff and site were being let down by the central company / management team making strange decisions that negatively impacted the experience.||First off, breakfast. Pre-booking for breakfast but not having any options is a strange choice. There are plenty of options that could have been provided for equivalent or less cost than the breakfast we were served. The assortment of cakes, pastries, etc, that were already a part of the forest retreat could serve that purpose well.||While we are on the subject of breakfast, for multiple mornings there was one member of staff expected to manage the dining room, reception and the retreat shop with no help. They did a fantastic job attempting to juggle an unmanageable workload, but having one person expected to cover all of those things took away from our experience, leading to longer wait times and us feeling bad for the waitress - and thinking about offering a helping hand!||Second is food quality. Again, this appears to be a company /management decision on the ingredients and source of food, rather than the quality of the chefs that were cooking. We had 4 breakfasts and 2 dinners at the retreat, with one being delivered to the cabin. Considering the 'luxury' advertising and high quality of the cabin, the pricing seemed almost too reasonable, which got me concerned about the quality. For the first dinner, the burger was clearly frozen and reheated, and had an extremely unpleasant texture as a result. The curry my partner had was very obviously nuked in the microwave, and was hotter than the sun in the centre. I expect this is how the preparation is directed, but sitting in a restaurant very obviously eating nuked microwave curry wasn't a great experience. The second dinner we both had pizza. The bases are clearly bought and shipped in, and they were OK, but just OK. Buying a frozen pizza in the local town and cooking it would likely have been better. With this meal we also ordered a mixed starter for PS10, which in the end included only about half of the items listed on the online menu. Breakfast was, on the whole, much better, just inconsistent. Despite technically having the same thing every day, the portions changed each time. Numbers of sausages, bacon etc were seemingly changed based on who was in the kitchen or 'what needed using up' which made the experience feel a bit off.||I think overall on the food we would have been willing to pay more for better quality, and that is worth considering in future.||Overall it was a good stay and we would return, we would likely just plan to self-cater more, or eat out locally.||Thank you Cropton, we would come again!
Positives:Hot tub, good walks,Friendly workers,Quiet. Negatives:Parts if the hot tub had fallen of and had holes in the side of the hot tub,Rotten wood that has fallen of the wall, when we got there was wrapper under the beds,No clocks,No windows that can open apart from bedrooms ones, fridge and freezer was small,Most Activities only open on Wednesday Closest beach is 45 minutes away
We came here for our minimoon in the last week of July. We've been to 2 other forest holiday sites. We had a golden oak - lodge 58. The check in was lovely - great customer service with loads of recommendations for the local area.||The lodge was a little tired but nothing too bad really. They sent us a bottle of Prosecco for our minimoon which was a nice touch.||I ordered the beer pump - this was brilliant and highly recommend. It kept so cold. We think we had about 12/14 pints for the week.||We also pre booked "just the two of us" which gave us late/early check in/out and fresh bakery goods. The fresh bakery bread and croissants were outstanding - highly recommend. It also gave us curry night package which was really nice too.||Unfortunately when we got there we were informed there was a reduced menu due to a kitchen part failing. This had been like this for a few days - I felt an email to me prior would have been better as then I'd have brought more food with me in the lodge. We tried the pizza delivery and I felt the pizza was a little cardboardy!||The forest has lots of great walks - we did end up with a few bites and tics on our dog so come prepared for that.||We visited nearby Helmsley and Whitby - both well worth a visit.||Overall a good stay with a few hiccups.
