Amazing place, historic Wellington beach with a lovely story telling aspect in the footpath.
Wellington Pit was the site of Cumbria's worst mining disaster. 136 men and boys were killed in an underground explosion on 11th May 1910. The mine was sealed to smother the fire and thr bodies were not recovered for several months. The mine buildings were designed by Sydney Smirke in the form of a castle with a keep, turrets and crenellated walls. The shafts were sunk between 1840 and 1845
