Iconic modern bridge over the River Tyne, offering separate sections for pedestrians & cyclists.
The coolest bridge ever!!! You can have a sit in the middle and enjoy the view. It's magnificent. Even you can feel the wind moving the bridge and the noise of the bikes crossing, it is a great experience. I wish I could have seen it when it tilts. Nevermind, it's an award winning bridge design!
Beautiful bridge it has a split section for walking and cyclists to pass through. There are seating areas on the bridge if you want to sit and enjoy the view.
What an absolutely amazing design, and piece of engineering. It was the first tilting bridge ever to be constructed. Opened for public use in 2001, the award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architectural practice WilkinsonEyre and structural engineering firm Gifford. The bridge is sometimes called the 'Blinking Eye Bridge' or the 'Winking Eye Bridge' due to its shape and its tilting method. The Millennium Bridge stands as the twentieth tallest structure in the city, (as of 2024) and is shorter in stature than the neighbouring Tyne Bridge. The first tilt took place on 28 June 2001 to 36,000 onlookers. I wish I was one of them, must go back and see it at full tilt, my photos definitely do not give it justice.
Not only a beautifully designed pedestrian and cycle bridge, but also great views of Newcastle's older Tyne bridges and some main sights.
Lucky enough to see it raised today. Lovely day and the quayside looked lush
A must see visit to this unique pedrstrian/ cycle bridge. Try to visit when the bridge swings open. Plenty of cafes at this location and the Baltic building is located on the Gateshead side.
