This nature reserve in Powys, Wales, features a variety of landscapes, including woodland, heathland, and wetlands, which provide a habitat for a range of wildlife, including red kites, peregrine falcons, and otters. The reserve has several walking trails, including the Gilfach Trail, which takes visitors through some of the most scenic areas, and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The reserve is also home to a number of historic features, including ancient monuments and a disused mine, which add to its cultural and industrial heritage.
Excellent place to enjoy nature. Dogs on short leads only. It's a privilege to take your dog to a nature reserve, not a right. Please respect that. This place is predominantly for nature and wildlife. Absolutely beautiful, peaceful, fantastic place. You can just drive a LWB van up to the visitor's centre, if you're confident and careful. Easier to park at the Welcome Gate and adjust your route accordingly.
Beautiful place to spend a few hours wandering amongst nature. We parked in the top car park and walked almost all of the trails apart from a bit of the purple. The green was quite strenuous but the picnic at the summit with the views was amazing! We felt like we had the place to ourselves as the only other people we saw were at the entrance car park. Be sure to leave a little donation towards the upkeep of this beautiful place.
Lovely set of walks for every level of walker (see photos as I've there's a shot of a map with all the walks). Very scenic routes of wildlife, history, mountains, rivers and we ended our walk on a stunning waterfall. There is toilets available at the cottage as well as a museum but there is no food or drink on site. Dogs were welcome but on leads only. As always in wales come weather prepared as even though it started sunny we got drenched by a downpour mid walk. Walking boots recommended. We easily spent 2-3 hours on the mid level history walk stopping for lunch too. The main carpark is fairly small, if you can't park there seems to be another car part around the corner. Disabled parking was available too.
Just a great place to walk and enjoy the outdoors. We live 50 miles away and always visit when we are in the area. Great views and varied habitats (moorland, fast-flowing river oak and birch woodlands). Easy parking and plenty of information boards.
Have passed the reserve many times, but until today have not been able to visit. Well now we have and what a gem! It has everything, flora and fauna in abundace. Trails well marked and plenty of seats dotted around for the weary.
Really beautiful wood and pastures, with stellar views across the valley. If you're in Rhayader it's only a short ride away. Loads of wildlife. I did the oak wood walk and it was worth it. Parking isn't vast but it had loads of spaces free.
