This reserve is a vast area of ancient Caledonian forest, heather-covered moorland, and sparkling lochs, nestled in the heart of Aberdeenshire. The reserve's diverse landscape is home to a wide range of wildlife, including red squirrels, otters, and capercaillies. Visitors can explore the reserve's many trails, including the popular Eildon Trail, which offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. The reserve is also steeped in history, with ancient monuments and settlements scattered throughout the landscape.
Beautiful 3 hours hike. Easy level.
Beautiful spot. Lots of walks available - both short and long - or start/finish longer right of way walks i.e. Firmouth/Fungle. The Old Pines walk is one of my favourite.
Beautiful scenery if you're prepared to put in a little leg work (though not overly hilly). I headed south east towards the Strone path (closed due to a particularly tenacious Caper protecting his turf!) then took a loop northwards before heading back west to the estate. The views of the mountains across the heathland were stunning. Alas no capercaillie sightings for me, but a trio of golden eagles circling overhead was pretty good consolation
Absolutely stunning scenery and so many different routes to follow!
Great views and a variety of different paths with different features. I've done a few walks and enjoyed all of them. There are toilets at the visitor centre which are open all year round. Good for families as it's not too steep for the little ones. Recently visited in the late afternoon and it's great when the sun is settling! There is a small parking fee of PS3 it's fair at that price.
Excellent place to visit. Beautiful scenery. Ballroom on the estate is a wonderful venue for a wedding. Great for walks and hikes.
