Glyndebourne is an opera house in the heart of the Sussex countryside. Glyndebourne is one of the finest and most celebrated opera houses in the world, delivering performances to some 150,000 people across a summer Festival and an autumn Tour, and a year-round programme of Learning & Engagement activity.
It's one of the most perfect experiences I've ever had - and tears saying something. Yes it's super expensive and for most people not something one can afford to do a lot - but wow was it worth it. We went from train from Brighton to Lewes and had lunch at Bill's in Lewes. Then caught 2pm coast to Glyndebourne. It was a hot sunny day and we didn't go for formal dress thankfully. However lots do so it's all very elegant. It's hard to describe the experience other than to say it's unique. Basically you get to see an opera of the highest quality in a stately home that had magnificent grounds and gardens. Most people picnic or have restaurant meal. We didn't but I think next time we would. The opera , which in our case was the Merry Widow - was beyond splendid. Extravagant in a beautiful way. You get a 90 min interval to eat abs relax. The venue never fills crowded, we never had to queue for anything and prices for drinks etc were reasonable. If you get a chance and live opera - just do it. You won't regret it.
This place is amazing, from the start to finish the whole day ran flawlessly and everyone was so polite and friendly. The gardens are so beautiful and it was so nice to have a picnic during the interval. You can really tell that everyone there has so much passion and love for opera. I can't wait to go back.
Awesome venue if you like your TOP quality classical music.
We love coming here. It's so English and so posh. The ever-changing large scale sculptures are lovely for photos. Loving Conrad Shawcross this year. The food this year also have gone up a notch...and of course there are multiple spaces for picnics which Glyndebourne is famous for. We have been coming for 25 years and we used to picnic but now we use the restaurants. If you are interested in gardening, look out for all the native orchids in the parking lot. The gardens a varied and interesting with everything from long herbaceous borders, to tropical gardens, to wild gardening to rose borders. It really is the staging of gardens against the house and opera building mixed with the statues that makes the outside so special. And on the rare occasion that the field next to the haha and croquet lawn is filled with sheep the whole place just sings with idyl. There's a fair number of people going for that "bucket list" day out but far more who come regularly. Please make an effort with your outfit as you will feel much more in keeping with the tradition of the place and you might even get a nice compliment
If considering wearing a kilt, the travel from London, performance, eating, and drinking all mean sitting down for hours on end. Next time (and I hope there is) I will rent a tux. And watch a slightly less silly, more dramatic opera. Further reduced tickets for under 30s? We could carry your luggage, and bring you drinks like the (grand) children you wish you had?
10 stars. Unforgettable experience and atmosphere. Will go again and again (and I travel from Canada to the U.K. to attend).
