This museum showcases the history of the Chiltern Hills and surrounding areas, with exhibits on geology, archaeology, and local industry. The museum is housed in a restored 19th-century building and features interactive displays, artifacts, and exhibits that tell the story of the region's past. Visitors can explore exhibits on the Chiltern Hills' unique geology, including fossils and dinosaur footprints, as well as learn about the area's rich archaeological heritage, including Roman and medieval artifacts. The museum also highlights the region's industrial past, with exhibits on the local furniture-making and printing industries.
Interesting town museum which has objects and documents of the town and its industries. It's larger than it looks and you can spend some time rambling around the rooms. The building was the priest's house and then a pub. There's a small shop and a garden with good views over the valley
I really enjoyed this museum. Shaftesbury is a very interesting little town and this museum explains it all very well.
I cannot say enough about this little gem of a museum in the heart of Shaftesbury! From the moment you open the door you're greeted with a warm welcome by the volunteers who man the place. The building itself is perched on a hill with stunning views overlooking Shaftesbury. Inside are artefacts and comprehensive information from AD300 to the present day! Comprised of two floors, there is a lift and ramps throughout that make it extremely accessible. If you're in the area give yourself a treat and go to Gold Hill Museum located literally at the top of the 'Hovis Advert' hill.
This place is a little gem, small but very interesting with some unusual and unexpected exhibits, do visit it if you're in Shaftsbury. Entry is free, the staff are very welcoming.
We came to see the Hill and the views, But so glad we visited this fantastic museum too, So much to see, Lots about the local history, Very friendly and welcoming staff, Definitely worth a visit.
This was my first visit to Shaftesbury and Gold Hill museum but certainly not my last. I wanted to visit the museum to see the dorset buttons but loved the whole experience of the museum, garden and volunteers. Lots of things to see and read about. Many thanks
