This review board is for guest who have attended the Grassholme Observatory NOT the reservoir - An astronomical observatory set up with the aim to educate and inspire visitors on the wonders of the universe - utilising research grade telescopes and presentation areas to highlight the importance of astronomy in STEM
We checked out the location ready for the potential up and coming Northern Lights. We were not disappointed and can't wait to hopefully, fingers crossed, get our first ever viewing.
If you're interested in astronomy and the night sky, the guys in the team here are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. They have an array of easy-to-use Dobsonian telescopes that total beginners can feel safe on, plus a large telescope they use to show you closer views of such favourites as Jupiter and the Orion Nebula. Whilst good weather can not be guaranteed, they offer a free return trip if it stays cloudy all evening. We had to wait until 9pm for clear skies, but when the cloud did clear, the view was as good as from any dark sky site. We were also lucky to see an Aurora Borealis as well. Definitely the icing on the cake
Attended an event for the Perseid meteor shower. Informative and interesting talk to warm us up before taking us outside to help us observe the night sky. No question was silly.. Intelligent and complete answers from a staff team that were thoroughly excited themselves. Probably helped that we saw not only meteors but also the northern lights and some noctilucent clouds. Definitely recommend
We attended an "Astronomy and Stargazing" event and had the most incredible time. The session started with Ben giving an overview of the universe, some key physics points and some milestones in the history of the universe. I would hesitate to call it a presentation, because whilst there were slides/videos, it was really more of a conversation about space, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and dive deeper into any of the topics that came up. I'd describe myself as a "space enthusiast" but a total novice astronomer, so I really appreciated being able to throw questions at Ben and Naomi. Sadly, it was a cloudy night, so we didn't get to make use of the telescopes on site, but our ticket allows us to come back another (hopefully not cloudy!) night and use the telescopes to see what the sky has to offer. We did, however, get a demo of the "main" telescope and were able to see photos of what the telescope can capture under better conditions. Ben and Naomi's enthusiasm and knowledge is unmatched and they really made the night special. If you have any interest in the night sky (and even if you don't!) this is well worth a visit, you won't be disappointed.
Had a great time on the summer night walk. Putting the universe into perspective. Got to look through the telescopes. The staff and volunteers are all very enthusiastic and keen to share their knowledge. A lovely location also.
Had a lovely walk from our accommodation, Grassholme is beautiful and tranquil. 7 mile round trip, but the hills made if seem more. Good signs to keep you on track though
