Traditionally decorated pub with countryside views, original features, a fire and a gastro menu.
Fantastic portions and great quality food! Grey Ox Inn is a very cosy and hidden away Pub/Restaurant. The atmosphere here was calm, relaxed (Tue evening) and felt very welcoming. There is a great Ox head mounted in the entrance and the decor is country style with exposed beams and tweed furnishings. Plenty of parking (30+ spaces) The staff were attentive, although it seemed we changed waiters a few times. Gave enough time and were helpful to accommodate requests without issue. The cocktails pictured tasted great, no complaints to quality or taste. The mains we had (sirloin steaks medium rare) were a good portion and came with ample accompaniments.(Hand cut chunky chips, onion rings, rocket salad with honey mustard dressing, mushroom & grilled tomato) One of our steaks was a little too rare in the middle, but it was still good so felt it did not need returning. Blue cheese sauce was great. My partner loved it, i felt a dash of cornstarch to thicken it slightly would have completed it for me. The garlic butter sauce was great. The desert again was great, creme brulee with a chocolate shortbread slice. No complaints here. Would return again, perfect for a Sunday or quiet mid week evening getaway meal.
Edit June 2024: called in again, with family and we all had a terrific lunch. Came with family as I'm over on holiday. Great pub. Great food. And very good service. Highly recommended.
We recently visited the Grey Ox after reopening under new management. As regular customers of the Grey Ox for years, we were slightly disappointed in the changes that have been made. Firstly you notice as you walk in, the lovely leather chairs that were previously placed in front of the open fire have been moved to the side, one of our favourite things to do was come and have a glass of wine in front of the fire after a long dog walk on a Sunday, so I really hope they bring these back for the winter months. Secondly, they have re-painted a lot of the restaurant area which definitely gives it a brighter feel, however I think more care needed to go into new chairs as many of them are incredibly uncomfortable and falling apart and the seams. Next was the food, this was a huge disappointment for both my partner and I. We ordered a sirloin steak, myself medium rare and my partner medium. Neither came cooked correctly and the taste was quite bland. The staff were very friendly but when asked for a wine list I was told there was not one, and when asked what red wine was available I had to go to the bar myself to select as the waitress did not know what was to offer. This pub has so much potential and I hope that the feedback they receive is considered and they can turn this around into a huge success.
The food was amazing, we couldn't fault it, portion sizes were generous. I was hoping to try something from their dessert menu but no room, after a starter of scallops and a main of beef cheek. Compliments to the chef !! The furniture though is tired which was the only thing that let our visit down. Just some chair covers would improve the rooms. Otherwise a fabulous visit .
Excellent Sunday dinner service today. Staff really friendly and the food was excellent. The dining area is split into different areas so you can find somewhere to suit your mood. Booking was easily done by the website with a follow up confirmation email soon after. Definitely worth visiting, excellent views nearby too.
Sunday roasts are good, but you get very little, we both got literally 2 potatoes each and a smol helping of mash, although admittedly they are quite good. The beef was kinda overdone and dry. A toilet refurb would be a shout.
