This 100-foot waterfall is situated in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, surrounded by lush greenery and rugged scenery. The waterfall's source is the Grey Mare's Tail Beck, a stream that flows from the nearby moors. As the water plunges down the rocky face, it creates a misty veil that rises into the air, adding to the attraction's mystical ambiance. The waterfall's base is surrounded by large rocks and boulders, worn smooth by the constant flow of water. On sunny days, the mist creates a rainbow effect, adding to the attraction's natural beauty. Visitors can hike to the waterfall from the nearby village of Arncliffe, following a scenic trail that winds through the picturesque countryside.
Grey Mare's Tail Waterfall is a great spot for a visit. If you're up for a challenge, the climb up to the lake is steep and tiring for the first 20 minutes, but it becomes more manageable after that. The hike took us around 50 minutes, and reaching the lake was definitely worth the effort. For those just wanting to see the waterfall, it's only a 5-minute walk from the car park, which costs PS4 for the day. The area is also perfect for an overnight stay in a campervan or tent, making it a convenient and scenic stop.
There's no doubt that the falls are outstanding in any weather as we arrived in 40mph winds and lashing rain. Bring some chang and your cards for the PS4 parking fee though. There are 2 machines and they can be temperamental. It is only a short 5 minutes or so around the west side of the ravine to get to a good viewpoint of the falls but you can go all the way round and up the steep track to the top of the falls and the feeder loch beyond. Again I'd say no more than 15 minutes to the top of the falls for a healthy person. The water is clear and icy cold and I. The winter months it is thankfully midge free. It would be a busy but refreshing stop for a picnic on a sunny day. Please be aware of the sheep in the area and leash your dogs. Our collies were itching to go chase them.
Beautiful day in the sun, took about an hour to reach the Loch had to stop few times as it is a steep climb. went for a paddle in the Loch the little fish had a blast munching at my feet was quite an experience lol.
Wow, absolutely breathtaking The views The waterfalls The Loch The sheep The goats A place of absolute beauty The walk to the Loch starts off steepish and then platues with a little climb here and there. Birds of prey can be found flying around the Loch. If my husband with Osteoarthritis can do it, so can you. Plenty of parking and well marked. Cannot miss it.
Fairly strenuous but beautiful walk up to the top of the falls and the lochan beyond. Very restful and peaceful at the top with stunning views.
