This 12th-century castle in Monmouthshire, Wales, is a well-preserved medieval fortress that has been modified over the centuries. Its stone walls and towers are surrounded by a water-filled moat, and the castle's architecture reflects its history of being built, destroyed, and rebuilt. The castle's keep, curtain walls, and towers remain intact, offering a glimpse into its past as a stronghold for the Normans and later as a royal residence. Today, visitors can explore the castle's grand halls, chapel, and battlements, and enjoy the surrounding countryside views.
Free entry. A lovely little site with interesting history. No parking is available here. We parked in the little village and walked to the site (it's a very short distance). I was a little disappointed to see locals using the inside of the castle as a football pitch for their children. The ball hit the remaining chimney stack several times whilst we were there and their dogs were roaming around off their leads.
We did Grosmont, Skenfrith and White Castle back to back today. This was our least favourite bit still really liked it. Access is a bit limited. You have to fight for somewhere to park on the main road and walk up. Was pretty busy when we went, lots of families BBQing and picnicking. Cracking views at the top of the stairs! We spent an hour here, but could easily do it in 20 minutes.
Fantastic place to visit, great views of the surrounding area. Must see if you've seen the other 2 castles in the area
Free entry. Lovely view. Part of history. Nearby pub and toilets available.
Amazing remains of a small castle built as one of the three along with Skenfrith and White castles.
Wow! I am so happy that I visited here this morning. This castle is amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed exploring it and the views of the beautiful Welsh countryside are jaw dropping!
