A picturesque lock on the River Nene, Gunthorpe Lock is a popular spot for boaters and walkers alike. The lock is surrounded by lush greenery and offers scenic views of the river and its banks. Visitors can watch boats navigate the lock, learn about its history and operation at the on-site information boards, or take a leisurely stroll along the towpath. The lock is also a great spot for picnics, with benches and grassy areas perfect for relaxing and enjoying the surroundings.
Great area, the first thing to mention is parking, the Canal & River Trust car park could do with clearer signage on the 2 blue badge bays, as while making it clear that they are provided by the C&R trust, it is not clear if payment is required for blue badge parking, even the interactive chat on their website don't know the answer. On to the area, great views of the river and lock, we walked towards Newark (downstream) for about 30mins passing a number of fisherman and see loads of birds etc, lovely quiet walk with just the sound of the wind in the tree, and the water in the river, got to say hello to loads of dogs (we did note that everyone with a dog had them on leads, and we're clearing up after their dogs), the surface under foot is uneven as you would expect from a country walk, dodging animal dropping such as cattle, rabbit and the occasional horse. Well worth another visit. There are a few place to get refreshment at the lock, but on this visit we did not stop in any so will review when I do.
Love it here, longstanding favourite family place to go for a walk by the river, watch the boats go through the lock & have a picnic. The cafe that used to be there was nice enough, had refreshments there in the past but its gone a bit upmarket now, A Bistro bar & clearly the high prices reflect that so we didn't go in & obviously can't comment apart from it looked nice & was very busy. Fortunately the ice cream van is still there & a row of pubs & restaurants near the main car park to choose from.
Really nice place to go for a walk. Good footpath but the river, plus benches and some interesting signage explaining the history. Fun to watch the barges go through the lock. Bonus of an ice cream van when we went. There are 2 large car parks and a couple of pubs for food and drink all in short walking distance.
Really lovely walk down the river and pathways that go on for miles. Lots of nature - we managed to catch a glimpse of several rare birds and other river dwelling creatures.
Good Views for a walk along the river Trent.
Lots of parking, great Italian restaurant under new management with livestock and ramblers roaming the banks of the turbulent Trent. Marvellous on Mothers Day in Spring.
