Looking for an unusual day out, why not discover the secret underground world of Government? Be transported back into the Cold War! Pet friendly!
Went with my daughter and young grandchildren they loved it looking for the mice my 3 yr old granddaughter keeps asking go again . Staff were great. My youngest granddaughter was in her pram stairs a bit steep but there is disabled access . Plenty of seats to rest on , a cafe .
Went on a bank holiday and visited again later that week. Dog friendly (though there is a cat ruling the roost!). A large and steep concrete ramp leads up to the entrance but signs suggest a lower disabled entrance may be available. Stairs are used to get from entry level to ground level (which feels like you are underground). Lots of history and was much more enjoyable and educational than I imagined. Cafe has a limited menu but was clean and the volunteers served with enthusiasm. Cheese toasty was very good. 'Count the mice' was added interest for youngsters. Some areas made me feel a little closed in and some exhibits are not suitable for those of a sensitive disposition. Trident, Chevaline warheads and WE177 nuclear weapons can be seen in a number areas. All are made safe for display. Do check out the VLF which Mrs Thatcher sent instructions via to sink Belgrano during the Falklands war! We liked the bunker so much we went round again (in reverse order). Recommend!
This place is amazing! If you are into war history, apocalypse stuff, British military history or prepping, this is the place for you. 27 rooms of intriguing and well presented authentic kit, things to do for the kids and a cinema where you can watch The War Game. Can't wait to go back!
Such a great experience. My boys(age 10&12) are totally obsessed with all things nuclear and military so it was really something they enjoyd with lots of different rooms to visit and exhibitions to see. Wouldn't recommend for little ones. It was all inside but it was absolutely freezing so wrap up. There is a small cafe serving soup, toasties, cakes and hot drinks and a small selection of gift shop items. Ticket is a anual pass so of you can visit again for free within the year. Bonus!
Amazing place, packed full of exhibits and displays. Fascinating and sobering displays, makes you thankful it was never needed, although it brings current events into a very sharp focus. Recommended.
Interesting place to visit suitable for all ages and dog friendly too!
