Hanging Rock Reserve is a popular destination for day-trippers and holidaymakers, located approximately one-hour north-west of Melbourne's CBD, near the villages of Woodend and Mount Macedon. ABOUT HANGING ROCK Hanging Rock, or Mount Diogenes as it's also known, is a rare volcanic formation. One of the best examples of a volcanic plug or mamelon in the world, it has been exposed to considerable weathering and erosion, resulting in a conglomeration of unusual rock formations. WHAT TO DO AT HANGING ROCK RESERVE Visitors enjoy wildlife spotting and walking on numerous trails that weave their way throughout the reserve, including the iconic Summit Trail. Go for a picnic or barbecue in the reserve, or fishing at Hanging Rock Dam.
Great walk. You need some level of fitness to reach the summit. They have timed it at 50 minutes. I have no level of fitness, and it took me 1.30hrs at a slow pace. The views up top are great. Don't over dress. The drive-in fee is $10. Ample parking. Clean toilets close by, too.
Good hike and is moderately challenging. Best part is the Macedon ranges view when you get to the top. My fitness level is not that great but it was worth it when you reach the top, weather was great too but a bit chilli than suburban weather. We went on a weekend with my 10 year old son and we spent a really good day. Entry fee is $10.
Amazing place. $10 to enter. Cafe, mini museum, toilets, rangers, sovereign shop. We took a walk all the way up the rocks. Steep incline, but the views are out of this world. We climbed at the start of winter. It was very windy but perfect views. Kangaroos galore. On the walk down , we walked around the race track and saw so many roos and a Kookaburra . Well worth a visit. Pristine place, plenty of parking at this time of year. I'm assuming will be super busy in the summer. Cafe is a little expensive for food. But defo tourist prices
Wonderful destination for the whole family, a group of friends, or just a couple. The walking tracks are reasonably easy overall. The main summit track is the steepest. If going on this one, it's best to take the stair side instead of the ramp. The map and arrow marking are useful to know which direction to travel. There is plenty of space to sit and enjoy the views. Some parts of the summit require you to climb rocks if you want to see around. In the main entrance, there is a playground, a spot for picnics, and even room to kick around a footy/soccer ball. For those interested, you can learn a bit of history or stop in the cafe. Parking costs $10, which can be paid by cash or card upon leaving.
Hiking at Hanging Rocks was truly incredible. I never imagined I'd be rewarded with such a mesmerizing view from the top. Seeing the Macedon Ranges from that vantage point was surreal. Surrounded by lush greenery, beautiful clouds, and the brightening sun, the scenic view was simply breathtaking. Climbing to the summit was relatively easy, though I took a few minutes of breaks along the way. Once I reached the top, fatigue didn't matter; I was captivated by the beauty around me. It was an unforgettable experience, well worth the hike for such a stunning view.
Beautiful place. Highly recommended for spending a day out. You have the option to picnic or hike or both. If you decide to hike to the summit, you will be rewarded by spectacular 360 degrees panoramic views.
