A 16th-century timber-framed barn with a thatched roof, featuring a rare and well-preserved example of a medieval aisled barn, with 12 oak posts supporting the roof and a unique cruciform design.
Just by chance my wife and I stumbled upon the Harmondsworth barn and ancient church next door. We were greeted first at the church by a groundskeeper who entertained us with its history and beauty. That same kind man also showed us the barn through a gap in the wall between the church and barn. We walk a few steps to the locked gate of the barn property, and tried to get a more complete view but could not see much through the locked gate. As we were walking away another kind gentleman arrived on his bike and noticed us trying to get a look. "Would you like to walk around?" He asked "Yes, please" we excitedly answered. He unlocked the gate let us in, locked the gate behind us and even unlocked the barn itself. Absolutely amazing, thank you
Lovely vist in the Sunshine, fascinating to look at and all the local guides very knowledgeable and bring the place to life. Free entry and car park. For a longer trip nice church and park also there.
Great local volunteers, very knowledgeable. You can learn some facts from real people who had ancestors working on this farm. Only downside it's open every two weeks and closed whole winter.
Be careful! This site only open From 9th April to 22nd October on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from 11am to 4pm so if you visit any other day you cannot go in. Visited during one of their open days where there are volunteers and shops open. This is very close to heathrow airport but still not very acessible because you have to take a bus then walk through the village to the site so recommend driving here instead. This is a historic barn with over 700 years of history mostly stores grain/food stock in the past. Now managed by english heritage
Fabulous bit of English history that fully deserves the title 'Cathedral of Middlesex'.
This is an amazing place. The barn is massive! It's withstood fire and there is a lot to see inside the Barn. It's been used in movies and you can see why. It's like stepping onto a movie set. There is plenty of parking , it's free to get in. Good Covid protocol's in place. There is a pub nearby and a church that has a toilet. It's a good day out. Harmondsworth itself is a really lovely village.
