Heal Somerset is a new 460-acre rewilding site just outside the village of Witham Friary, a large nature reserve being created by Heal Rewilding, a national charity aiming to give 24,000 acres back to nature by 2050. Heal Somerset is our foundation site. The wildlife here is already beginning to thrive, with flocks of finches, resident birds of prey, 71 species of moths, and roe and fallow deer. There are two large areas open 24/7 to the public, with mown paths for easy walking. We also run tours, events and camping. Access is free with a suggested voluntary donation. The site isn't yet suitable for people in wheelchairs (we are working on this). Please note: NO DOGS are allowed (except on the existing public footpath).
What a great project ... returning 500 acres back to nature ... sure it's going to take time , but the team at Heal are dedicated to making it happen , and to doing the same in every county across the uk . The land( the south field ) is open to the public 24/7 ... to walk and enjoy the English countryside as nature reclaims it , plants insects and wildlife all on show . Make a donation if you go , it's beautiful .
A wonderful oasis of increasing diversity. So healing to walk quietly through this large space and observe the changes that unmanaged nature brings to our generally depleted 'green' landscape. Thanks for the amazing vision and the inner joy that it brings.
Heal Rewilding are leading the way in this movement in the UK; this is their first site, a 400+ acre farm on low-grade land where wildlife is booming just one year into this inspiring project. Heal also plan a project in every count of England. Well worth a visit: gorgeous, wildish, unbelievably tranquil campsite, a growing range of amenities planned and an incredibly lovely and capable team of staff and volunteers!
Love this place and what they are doing. You can't just rock up though - contact them first.
