Church built as an Early English-style Catholic abbey in the 12th century and repurposed in 1537.
An absolutely beautiful abbey, so very rich in history. A wonderful atmosphere here! The lady watching over the steps down to the crypt, was really pleasant and very informative too. There is a PS3.00 for adults to go down into the crypt (not for the storage of bodies, but for treasures!) But it's interesting to have a look nonetheless, as back when the original church was first built between 672 - 674, both it and the crypt were made all with Roman stone from Corbridge. It doesn't take too long to look around but still, it's a lovely place to visit nonetheless, especially for the historical aspect. And then, of course, there's also the town of Hexham, with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy afterwards!
A beautiful building, with 1350 years of history. Please speak to the volunteers at the front door so you get the most out of your visit. The small museum is also worth a stroll, and of course the cafe is a must. Don't forget to donate to the running and upkeep of the abbey. It's located right in the centre of the town, so park in Tesco (free for 3 hours) and walk up. There's also a park/gardens outside as well.
Hexham Abbey is rich in history of the different centuries. The Abbey was made from recycled stone from Corbridge. For me it is the designs & architecture within the Abbey and stone work. I wasn't able to go down to the crypt as I'm disabled, but my partner was my eyes and took photos for me to see. I think it I'd the crypt which is the only Abbey to be mainly all in tact; and thd oldest part of thd Abbey. It was built in 674 by St Wilfred. The crypt costs PS3 per adult and PS1 per child. It took about 45 - 1hr to visit the Abbey.
We visited on the weekend of the Festival of Flame and were very lucky to pop into the Abbey as they were preparing it for the evening light display. What a treat it was to see the team setting up the wonderful display in this majestic building, and with beautiful music to accompany. It's something we'll remember for a long time. Hexham is fast becoming one of our favourite places to visit and each time we come, we visit the abbey. They've created a great visitor experience, including a lovely cafe. Other such venues could learn alot from Hexham Abbey.
The staff there are fantastic, verbal information supplied when you walk in. Their extremely knowledgeable, and lone sharing it so s too make your visit, don't forget it's free, but a Donation, or at least visit the Cafe or Shop please. It's a beautiful place too visit..
