This 14th-century gaol (jail) is one of the oldest in the UK and features a unique blend of medieval and Tudor architecture. Its stone walls and towers have witnessed centuries of history, including the imprisonment of border reivers and the 1536 uprising of the Northumberland rebels. Today, visitors can explore the gaol's atmospheric interior, which includes the original prison cells, the chapel, and the governor's quarters. Exhibits showcase the history of the gaol, the lives of its prisoners, and the harsh realities of medieval justice.
Hexham Gaol is/ was the oldest prison in England . Has 3 floors and basement where the dungeon is, but you stay in the lift to hear about the dungeon. The museum was disabled friendly but the automatic door wasn't working today. 17 & under are free, PS 7 each to get in, and the ticket lasts a year. A carer with the disabled person gets in for PS6. The prison is very informative with hands-on activities. There is a room for children & and adults, lol, that has dress ups & arts & crafts... Audio information. There is a shop but no toilets. There is a car park in Market place but is limited. Other car park 200 yes away and one down the road.
We had a fantastic trip to Hexham yesterday where we visited the Hexham Old Gaol. The museum was informative and interactive. We had 5 children with us and we had so much fun in the top room dressing up and doing crafts! Thank you for a brilliant few hours.
Not a lot there, especially for kids, but a fascinating view into the history of hexham and surrounding areas. There are some interactive items and some play/dress up areas for the kids. Price is reasonable PS7 for adults but free for kids, well worth an hour exploration. There is also a dungeon, but sadly on the day the exhibit wasn't working
The talk was very good...was on 2 times the day we visited and I'd recommend. Interesting place, on the small side. Dog friendly. Very reasonable fee to enter and you can use it for a full year. Worth a visit.
Really enjoyed our little guided tour around the old goal. The guide was very good and extremely knowledgeable. It only takes about 20 minutes for the tour which is just right, especially if you have kids with you
Well worth a look to see the oldest purpose built jail in England and at 4.50 per adult if more than one visiting the price is very good . Not a huge amount to see, but what there is was very interesting . I can imagine that children really enjoy it as there was plenty of interactive things for them to do . Well worth a visit.
Wheelchair-accessible entrance
Restaurant
Good for kids
