A great place to walk, cycle and much more! In the heart of the National Forest, Hicks Lodge is a former coal mining site that has been totally transformed by new plantings and exciting trails for you to enjoy. A great day out for the budding cyclist, from tearaway toddlers to young teens perfecting their skills, we've got a range of trails for beginner to intermediate appetites. Visit our lakeside bird hide where you can soak in the beautiful scenery and spot some unique wildlife, such as the migratory sand martins. There are also walking and horse riding paths to explore the forest, a play area and a cafe!
Myself and two friends hacked over today, it was my first visit but I'll be returning on my horse and with my dog. Some lovely tracks to follow on the horses and so much space so didn't come across to many cyclists or dog walkers. The cafe has space to tie up the horses and pop in for a coffee and the mounting block makes it easy to get back on board - always a bonus. Definitely coming back to do some more exploring
You can hire bikes by booking online and follow several different routes. Great picnic spots all around and there is a cafe and toilets at the car park. Car parking uses the ring go app so handy to have it downloaded before you go.
Great place for long walks and the cafe is very nice with seating inside and outside and there is a bike hire service as well.
I was not feeling this place, wasn't a very tranquil walk. I can see it being perfect for horse riders or bikes or taking your children out for the day, but it's not for doggies. The paths are very wide which is great and have sort of gravel/dirt on so they are great to walk, push a pram or bike. We didn't see any forest trails, the existing ones were closed which is a shame so you had to walk on the big paths. The parking is a bit pricey as well PS2 for an hour, PS4 for 2 hours and PS6 for the day. There's a lovely cafe too just near the car park that overlooks the fields. I do not think we will be visiting again however, not with the doggies at least.
Expensive but great location. Good coffee but limited cakes and all small portions. It's lovely to have this on our doorstep but you can see it's not owned by individuals who would try much harder.
Pleasant walk around the lake with geese and bird hide. Lovely for a walk or cycle with kids. Cafe on site. Parking PS3.50 for an hour with parking app or credit card.
