Nestled in the picturesque countryside of Herefordshire, this campsite is set amidst a working apple farm, offering a tranquil retreat surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery.
Liked: We received a warm welcome from both owners during our short stay. The large field has lollipop shaped pitches mown out for 9 campers and you are surrounded by beautiful countryside. Buzzards, owls, bunnies and deers- the woodland walk was lovely. We checked out the activity Barn and kitchen and it all looked good- in particular the bathrooms were like large clean Hotel bathrooms- not a shabby barn with a motion light like we're used to! We got directions for the local pub and set off, only to bump into Matt on the roads who kindly ran us there anyway! Disliked: Nothing
Liked: The stunning views, size of pitches, beautiful setting, spotless and modern facilities, scenic walks around the farm, sausages and cider made from the farmer's pigs and apples, friendly and very helpful hosts, flowers everywhere, impressive barn with darts, table tennis and twinkly lights, well equipped kitchen, a wonderful rural retreat yet near lots of places of interest. We loved it! Disliked: Having to leave!
Liked: Beautiful farm campsite, with acres of rolling hills and woodland walks, with very friendly hosts Great location for access to Jurassic coast. Peaceful, serene, lots of wildlife. Lovely clean toilets and showers, amazing communal barn with kitchen. Will definitely return. Disliked: Nothing. Great site and great value.
Liked: Absolutely everything about this site is fantastic...what Matt, Frida and family have created here is quite special. We were incredibly lucky with the weather during our stay in this wildlife haven, which gave our kids the opportunity to enjoy camping the way I remembered it being as a kid. On arrival the noise from the crickets and grasshoppers was deafening and the kids spent the next week constantly catching them...they were accompanied by gargantuan dragonflies which were doing their best to keep the midge population down! Matt seemed to continually pop up out of the ether to offer petting sessions with the chickens, hunting for glow-worms and seeing the new piggies arriving. Piotr (I think was his name?!) who works on the farm also shouted for the kids to come over and jump up into the cab of his John Deere one day when out working on the new pig pens... everyone was so lovely! Speaking of pigs, we enjoyed the previous residents for breakfast one morning along with freshly laid eggs...delicious. Evenings were spent enjoying the cider made from the farm's apples followed by toasting marshmallows and stargazing. The pitches are rather private, so much so, it took us two days before we realised we knew the people camping on the pitch next to us! There's only 9 pitches and they are mown into a wildflower meadow on a little hillock in the middle of a stunning valley...our youngest suffers quite badly from hayfever but we kept him out of the long grass and he coped very well. I was delighted to be woken at 4:15am one morning by a tawny owl hunting field mice rather noisily above our awning, and during the daytime the numerous buzzards circled and made a right racket in the pine forest that lines one side of the valley...Merlin app users will love it here! There's a lovely signposted walk that runs around the edge of the farm and passes lakes before sweeping through woodland and up through a lovely old orchard, to then loop around the very top of the farm with views down the whole valley...our eldest startled a young buck in the forest and we also saw a rather splendid stag dart off into the orchards on another morning! There's a lovely barn that is well equipped with a fully fitted kitchen...if the weather was poor this would be a lovely communal hub! We bumped into a few other campers there who were all lovely. There's a table tennis table that the kids enjoyed playing on whilst I washed dishes and there was also a dartboard...there are plenty of electric points situated next to tables and benches so you can charge devices while playing a few board games as well. The amenities block was more in line with a nice hotel than a campsite and the showers were lovely and warm...as other reviewers have mentioned though, you'll need to hang dry clothes/towels over the top of the door or keep them in a bag to stop them getting wet. With the site being so small it was easy for the amenities to be kept spotlessly clean. Whilst being a delightful rural idyll, Hincknowle is handily only 5mins north of Bridport...6mins from a Lidl, 10mins from the A35 and 12mins from the lovely West Bay (famously where Broadchurch was filmed). The entire Jurassic Coast from Lyme Regis to Weymouth is within a 45min radius...I chuckled to myself as we passed the campers in West Bay crammed into their site right next to the main road...each to their own I guess! Mobile reception is terrible, but that honestly made the stay even nicer... there's a bit of H+ so you'll just about be able to send a text, but might struggle downloading images or running apps. We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 nights here and really can't wait to head back next year... we've found an absolute gem!!! Disliked: There is nothing to dislike here at all! The only thing we missed, by not staying on a Saturday night, was Frida's weekly wood-fired pizza night...it looks fantastic from the pics I've seen and we'll definitely be staying on a Saturday next year! There's also a lovely looking pub a short walk through the orchards into Melplash, but this was sadly closed when we stayed...again, hopefully it'll be back up and running for our next stay!
Liked: The scenery, nature and wildlife was stunning, beautiful views with great walks from the site. A rope swing to keep the kids busy, along with games in the barn if weather is tricky. Owners very helpful and work hard to make this campsite special, fresh flowers, fairy lights in the barn, keeping everything spotless, giving us all the info we needed to explore the beautiful surroundings. An outstanding campsite, we'll be back! Disliked: Nothing. Possibly a little guide to help walkers navigate the incredible grounds would be a bonus- although it's a great place to get lost!
Liked: Loved this campsite. The barn is such a good resource, having a kitchen available is great. Frida and matt are friendly and very helpful. Circular walk is lovely. We would love to come back next year! Disliked: nothing
