These 12th-century church ruins stand amidst a tranquil graveyard, their crumbling stone walls and arches a testament to the passage of time.
Holy Cross is an interesting site, but sadly the gate was closed and padlocked. You can still see the ruins, but after the recent rains the surrounding field was absolutely waterlogged. The base of the font is still in place, but it's difficult to see it from the fence. The font itself is now in St. Peter's church, Wallsend. Free roadside parking is available.
Interesting local site. I think it was the only Parish church between North Shields and Newcastle for a long time The current Church, St.Peter's, near Burnside High School, replaced it in 1809.
Interesting to see, it's fenced off (though believe it has been for years) so can't really go explore up close but assume this it to protect it.
It's exactly what you see in the photo. Still nice to visit if you're looking to diversify your walks.
Not a lot to see but worth a look
900 year old ruins, and some seriously old graves (1600s).
Good for kids
