A tranquil island off the northeast coast of England, Holy Island is a haven for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike. The island is home to the medieval Lindisfarne Priory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the adjacent Lindisfarne Castle, a 16th-century fortification. The island's picturesque landscape features vast sandy beaches, rocky shores, and rolling dunes, providing a serene atmosphere for walkers and birdwatchers. The island's rich history dates back to the 7th century, with evidence of ancient Christian settlements and Viking invasions. Today, visitors can explore the island's quaint villages, historic landmarks, and unspoiled natural beauty, making it a unique and unforgettable destination.
Visited the priory as members of English heritage. Been before, worth visiting again. Two car parks. PS7.50 on one car park for 4 hours, the other PS9 for 4 hours. Can pay by phone. Toilets in village centre. Not many cafes for the amount of visitors. We didn't go to castle, been before. Not worth the money for a 2nd visit. Went to the walled garden, and inside the lime kilns. Fascinating.
The Priory is well worth a visit. The Island is peaceful and beautiful views. Make sure you visit Tesco in Berwick for your meal deal and picnic, unless you are happy at very unnecessarily expensive food options on the Island, especially if you visit as a family.
Great experience during the off season. The castle was shut for winter, but you were still able to walk up the gates. The island was very quaint and welcoming. I imagine during the busy season it gets very busy. Plenty of warning about getting across the causeway before the tide comes in, which definitely shouldn't be ignored.
This is a tide island that you can only drive to when the tide is low. Times are well posted and lots of warning are around. The drive up is beautiful. The parking is before the town entry. There is a fee. The town is a charming village with a few places to eat and sleep. There is lots to do on this little island but it will all require walking. The castle is along distance away. Lots of beaches and bluffs to wander. View points. The Priory is magnificent. This was once a fort too so there are fortifications to visit. There is such charm here and intimacy. Loved it and would like to spend more time to enjoy all to offer
Had a fabulous day on Holy island, nice walk to Lindisfarne castle and then on to the abbey.
Beautiful island, though it can get crowded with visitors especially in the summer months. However they're parts of the island where you can get away from it all and hear the waves of the sea, birds chirping and I also thought I could hear seals in the distance The island can be expensive for example PS3.00 for a coffee from the van etc. So I suggest bringing your own or waiting until you get to Seahouses for the Coop store.
