It was Armed Forces Day and I wanted to reflect and look at something historical with a theme of servitude that was close to me. I had been advised to visit the Maritime Museum by a friend and my first impressions were greeted by friendly volunteer staff who had the time to chat and welcome myself and my wife. We paid our entrance fee and entered and were again greeted by an ex lifeguard volunteer who had a wealth of knowledge of the exhibits on display, local knowledge and a passion for sharing. We felt incredibly at ease and were impressed with the amount of exhibits, and museum pieces carefully and thoughtfully arranged in such a limited space, most definitely worth a visit if your ever in Holyhead.
Nice small museum about naval history around the region. Friendly staff to guide you through. War time bomb shelter also included in ticket price. Admission Free for children.
As someone that's spent many years in the museum sector I never miss an opportunity to see a museum if I'm in the area... Holyhead Maritime Museum is a real treat ! Exceptionally laid out full to the rafters with the town's maritime history. The volunteers are absolutely welcoming and so knowledgable, my 2 hours visit was an education, not just in maritime history but the town's heritage as well. Long may independent museums like this one continue, it's a real credit to Anglesey !
A very warm hearted, special experience! I wish I could have stayed longer but had to catch a bus. My guide was very kind and knowledgeable. I left with so much curiosity and respect for the history of holyhead. My personal favorite piece displayed was the Insignia for the 36th Bomb squad- a winged radar gremlin! Designed by a member of the squad that was formerly employed by Walt Disney Studios. I want this jacket so badly!!!!
It was ok. Smaller than I thought it was going to be. Packed full of items and history from the first ever lifeboat and WW items. It was very warm in the room and a bit overwhelming for my son. Great for those interested in old times. Expensive for what it was.
We had a fabulous couple of hours wandering around the maritime museum and bunker, we were lucky enough to meet two of the volunteers who showed us around, you could see they enjoyed being apart of the museum and their enthusiasm for the maritime past of Holyhead.
