Horsey Island Airfield is a small airfield located on Horsey Island, a small island off the coast of Norfolk, England. The airfield has a single grass runway and is primarily used for private flying and gliding. The airfield is surrounded by picturesque countryside and offers scenic views of the surrounding area.
Horsey Island is the largest of those areas of higher ground, nestling together in the general area known as Walton Backwaters. Its name is literally a reference to the long history of breeding & grazing horses here. Although Horsey Island has nature reserve status, it remains a working horse stud. At high tides the island is separated from the mainland & this needs to be remembered by visitors. I've not ventured over the causeway for a few decades, but it was the case that permission needed to be requested from the landowner before doing so, (because the causeway & sea wall is a permissive path, NOT a Public Footpath). Horsey Island has been used as a TV filming location, (including for the military drama series, Sharpe's Rifles, starring Sean Bean). But its main claim to fame is that it was used by author Arthur Ransome for siting the central campsite in the Swallows Amazons adventure, 'Secret Water'.
Boy racers; Frederick, Patrick and Christopher were here 2020!
Lots of space and tranquility on this nature reserve carefully managed by a friendly family.
