Beautiful Palladian Mansion in West Norfolk built for Britain's First Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, in the 1720s. Now home to the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley and his family - a descendant of Sir Robert Walpole. Houghton Hall is set in parkland, with white fallow deer, an award-winning Walled Garden, a Soldier Museum, Stables, Cafe & Gift Shop. An impressive permanent collection of contemporary sculptures is displayed in the grounds.
One of the best estates we have visited. The house is fascinating with guides in each room to answer questions. There are extensive grounds to walk through with our favourite being the walled garden. Refreshments are available at the entrance. A must visit if in the area.
Excellent day out with friends. Despite very damp conditions, the walled garden was a great experience. We had a good lunch in the cafe followed by a quick look around the military figures museum and then the house itself. The Gormley bronze figures in the grounds were a delight to find and made the outing even more interesting. Go and see Houghton Hall for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
Well worth a visit. The grounds and the estate as well kept and have some beautiful views. The walled garden is exquisitely maintained with a broad mix of plants. The house itself has some spectacular rooms. Not my favourite style or era but a great example and enough info to make the visit informative. Friendly and informed staff. We got to see the Anthony Gormley exhibit which was unique.
Really interesting place. The house is so well preserved and is very beautiful inside and out. The wider estate is full of statues of/by Gormally and the huge kitchen gardens filled with produce of all varieties and more sculptures and exhibits.
A large estate, stately home, deer park and walled garden. We visited the garden in late August and saw lots of fruit, dahlias in flower, sunflowers, and glorious long beds.
Houghton Hall really is stunning.. and the gardens and grounds absolutely beautiful! The walled garden is one of the best have ever seen and the grounds currently with the Anthony Gormley's 'time horizon' exhibit featuring 100 statues distributed over 300 acres of parkland is well worth a visit - highly recommended
