Beautiful gardens, woodland walks, a Prime Minister and a famous cup of tea - Earl Grey of course since Howick was his home!
Lovely location with beautiful gardens, woodlands and arboretum. Interesting little church with colourful and varied kneelers. Limited availability of the house to view. Very busy, especially the tea rooms between 12-2pm. Plenty of car parking space. Numerous walks of varying distances. Privately owned estate of the Earl Grey (yes of the tea fame) family heritage.
On our recent family holiday everything was packed. It felt like the entire world had descended on Alnwick, Bamburgh, and Seahouses. Our afternoon out at Howick Hall was fantastic and was an unexpected highlight of our holiday. There were quite a few people there, but it's so spaced out you can find a corner of peace and quiet. The sensory garden is fantastic for kids and the walk down to the sea is definitely worth the effort. The staff in the tea room are very welcoming, we ended up going for lunch and post walk refreshments. The car park is great.
Ticket Office Hut is at the far end of the car park. Price just PS18 for us both as oaps. Over the road, thru gate and either straight ahead for the Visitor Centre, Tea Room & Toilets or turn right as we did to head straight to the Bog Garden - which was splendid, such lovely tall planting. We then walked around to the Wild Origin Garden with its lovely arbour & stone sculpture. Next the Sensory Garden, which was superb, not only the planting but we could see how useful all the additions were to provide sensory stimulus for both children & adults. Using the map we walked thru the woods, down to the stream and up to the fairly new Hydrangea Garden - some established but also lots of new plants going in. Back down the hill, over the stream and up to the ornamental borders at the back of Howick Hall & Tea Rooms. The borders were all beautiful. Leave energy for the walk back around to front of the Hall, there is no short cut. We had lunch in the Tea Room, which on a hot day, was lovely & cool inside - nice large room, plenty of seating. Items for sale in cabinets and on tables, dotted around. Lastly called in the Visitor Centre (entrance opposite the large pond). Lovely grand entrance with lots of info on the flora and fauna. 2 large beautifully decorated rooms and hallways to look around, finished off the visit nicely. Will def return in Autumn to see how the plants and trees have changed. Def recommend.
The gardens, arboretum and tea room are all so lovely. Gardens were so peaceful. It's definitely a plant person's dream. The tea room offers a great selection of teas as well as an amazing array of homebaking. We loved it so much, we visited 2 days on the trot!!
What a beautiful place to visit . My partner and I visited whilst staying in Hexham . This was my birthday so I chose visiting here despite it being an hour away from where we were staying as I love gardens and Earl grey tea !! We spent around 3 hours here . Lovely gardens and walks / paths to wander around . The Earl Grey tea room is a must . Staff at the booking kiosk were helpful and knowledgeable . The weather was perfect and we really enjoyed our visit . Very good value for money too
Large country house and gardens. Overall the house has 2 rooms you can see and the gardens are extensive and primarily an arboretum. If I'm honest I was underwhelmed - the walls in the trees was meant enough and well signed. The gardens less so and disappointing. Not sure what I was expecting but it fell short tbh. This is privately owned and clearly doesn't have the funds to really ramp it up. Gardens has areas like Bog garden, Hydrangea collection etc that were ok but needed a bit of context. Occasionally it tells you where something was collected from etc but not often enough for me. Big disappointment was the huge walled Kitchen Garden - Not used and apparently used for horse jumps. This could have been the impressive centre piece of veg and flowers etc but instead it's unused as a garden and no access allowed. Shame!
