We are an independently funded town museum, home to the curious and the wonderful. Established in 1932, Ilfracombe museum holds collections of natural history, taxidermy, African ethnography, South American and Asian artefacts. We also have objects from closer to home telling of Ilfracombe's distinctive and proud history as a maritime town and a renowned resort. We are guardians of a very rare and extensive First World War photo collection. All in all, a visit to our museum will leave you feeling you have discovered so much - there is something for everyone. Children can enjoy trails and handling objects. Researchers can access our archives by arrangement. We hope you'll come and visit us soon
Local museum crammed with things. You've got to take a bit of time to look up and around and in the drawers to really appreciate just how much there is to see. The volunteers who run it are lovely.
A lovely little museum with many interesting things to see and learn about. The hands on draws were great and holding a wooly mammoth tooth was amazing! On entry, the custodian named Stephen provided a very well delivered overview of what's to be seen and was more than happy to talk about anything in the museum. If you are lucky and are there when the clock mechanism is about to go off, Stephen will gather you round and give a small talk about it.
We visited today and really enjoyed the museum. It's jam packed with curiosities and our grandchildren especially loved it. There's something for everyone, it's well worth a visit.
A really lovely surprise, an excellent museum which covers a great deal of History. Very interactive. Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We could have spent a lot longer there. It is definitely worth a visit for anyone of any age.
Lovely little museum, with the normal eclectic mix of English treasures. I particularly enjoyed the radio 2nd world war interviews, the war photos and letters in the end room and the virtual train journey projected against the wall.
Lovely well maintained museum, it holds a range of every day items from 1800's up to fairly recent times. Covering War times, social changes and evolution of Ilfracombe. Although with how times have changed, I wonder if some of the artifacts could be returned to their natural collections. Egypt and Peru. The wedding cake from 1900s and every moth and butterfly you could imagine. It's a great little place to stop and if the kids like arts and crafts then why not do some brass rubbing. PS2each. Volunteers were so informative, friendly and just a pleasure.
