As the train winds its way through the Scottish Highlands, it stops at quaint stations, allowing passengers to disembark and explore the local scenery, castles, and historic sites. The Jacobite Steam Train is a truly unique and unforgettable experience, perfect for those seeking a romantic and nostalgic journey through one of Scotland's most beautiful regions.
So much fun! We bought tickets to indulge our 22-year-old Harry Potter fan daughter, but in the end we all had a wonderful time. The views are spectacular, and the steam train was enchanting. All along the track people lined up to see the train and then waved and cheered when we passed. Our carriage attendant Oswald was charming and really added to the experience. Definitely recommended. The train books up months in advance, but a local gave us a tip for a fallback for folks who don't plan that far ahead. He said the regular local train from Fort William to Mallaig actually has better views of the famous aqueduct because the windows are much larger. It wouldn't have the same ambiance, but if you're desperate to provide a Harry Potter train experience for your kids, it could do in a pinch. Or you can stake out a spot near the aqueduct and wait for the Potter train to come by. You'll have loads of company.
Awesome ride very nice and very comfortable. Some things to note . You may get the steam train if you ride in the morning. The first class seats are very comfy I heard they have private cabins on some trains , not sure if it's true. Enjoy the panoramic views and bring your tea coffee and food on board the table is pretty huge you can use it without any problems. I had no problems boarding this train and make sure you have enough time to enjoy Fort William its worth the trip.
Beautiful train ride for both Harry Potter fans and not. Saw a lot of harry potter film locations and beautiful scenery and had a lovely lunch in Mallaig. The volunteer in our coach was absolutely fantastic, so enthusiastic and pointed out all areas of interest, really helped to make the trip, I'm sorry I didn't catch your name but thank you. The tickets sell out quickly and very far in advance.
This was an absolute dream come true for me to ride this train. After weeks of checking the website daily, I secured two first class tickets, so I recommend anyone trying to get tickets to do the same. The train journey from Fort William to Mallaig is about an hour long, but with the spectacular views, fantastic commentary, and free tea or coffee with biscuits (in first class), it isn't long enough! All the staff were incredibly kind, helpful, and friendly, and I must make a special mention to the lovely refreshment trolley ladies who I enjoyed chatting about Harry Potter to. This is a must ride for any Harry Potter fan as you see the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct from both sides and Dumbledores Grave. There is also a trolley of Harry Potter merchandise that visits you at your seat but the prices were a little steep. You can also indulge in a Butterbeer cocktail or hot chocolate on board.
I'm really disappointed in the overall experience and think that the price/quality ratio is just not there (maybe it was in the past). 1- you are sold a journey on a steam train and, let's be honest, this is part of the reason it's so expensive. However, you might turn up on the day and instead be given a diesel locomotive. There's no option to change your ticket or get any sort of compensation. It's buried in the terms and conditions that you may or may not get the steam train. 2- the carriages are not at all like the photos online. Apparently as of 2024 it's all newer wagons but the photos you are sold online do not reflect this reality. So in the case that you take a diesel locomotive, 100% of the train that you were sold is not what you will travel on on the day. 3- there were more toilets out of order than toilets that actually worked and the ones that did work were dirty. 4- the windows inside the carriages are filthy (maybe not much can be done about the exteriors but the interiors themselves are greasy/ dirty). You are not allowed to take any photos out of open windows and there are stewards between every carriage to make sure that you don't take any photos out of open windows. This rule should be made clear when selling the train because it was obviously allowed in the past and is probably a reason that many people book the train. All in all it doesn't feel at all like the trip you are sold on the website (and if you consider the train carriages and the diesel locomotive it literally isn't the trip you've bought)
People leaving negative reviews should take time to review the actual company that operates the train and not the actual train experience itself. Do not listen to the reviews, absolutely amazing experience that I would recommend to anyone. Lovely, helpful staff and easy to find/navigate. Views from the trip are second to none. Well worth the time and the money
