Lovely small, relatively young woodland that backs onto Oliver's Nursery, Witham. Planted in memory of James Cook, the last person to be hanged from Chelmsford gaol. James Cook was sentenced to death in 1829 for a series of arson attacks on Oliver's Farm, where he worked but it was widely believed that he was innocent and, being fatherless, an easy scapegoat. Despite William Luard, a local magistrate, petitioning the prime minister, the sentence was still carried out. In 1992, Witham Town Council acquired the 14 acres of the site and local people helped plant the woodland. It now provides a beautiful place for walks, den building and a wonderful wildlife habitat. A number of benches have been put in the wide grassy central intersecting paths. I have seen bats here, a wide variety of birds and tawny owls have successfully nested in the woodland.
has parking for 6 cars this place is nice just to go for a stroll and take the dog. kids will like this to some times it floods so take your wellies you see the wildlife you have to catch them quick its quite small but nice

A great spot to meet a friend or two and go for a walk, or take you dog to if you need a spot of the outside. It's larger than it looks from the road and is nice and secluded. The trees are well kept and the parking is free. Definitely nice to get a little exercise there!
Nice little wood for a quick dog walk play hide & seek with kids as not Massive so can't lose them. Build dens clean area. Spend on average half hour here we spent longer as had a picnic & played lots of games but half hour walk get round at most
