Simply exceptional storytelling and informative content at this small, quaint historical house. Staff were very kind and generous, you could tell they loved their job and were enthusiastic about the history. They recreated the way Jane and her family would live. Perfect for both Jane Austen enthusiasts and lovers of history, especially of Regency England and its context, relations with the world, customs. Also loved the souvenir shop -- stocks almost all the versions of Austen's novels, some historical books, and so many goodies from the local area!
I was here yesterday and I already want to go back! An absolute must-see for all Austen lovers. Very easy day trip by public transport. Coming from London Waterloo, take the South Western Railway to Alton (anytime roundtrip PS28) then take a taxi from the station to the House (one way PS8.40). The staff are so welcoming and knowledgeable! You can ask them questions and they will tell you all the little fun facts about Jane and the House. Definitely book a ticket in advance as the House is quite small so only a limited number of people are allowed at the same time. The shop is also definitely worth a visit. There are collector's editions of the books at a really good price. This place really makes me wish I live in England so I can visit whenever I want to. The ticket is valid as an annual pass. I just love it!! A million stars!
If you're a fan of Jane Austen (and even if you're not), the museum is a real treasure trove of Austen history and memorabilia. You really feel like you're peeking on her life - and can see where she got her ideas and characters for her books. There is so much to learn and experience. Really loved it. The gardens are also really lovely and don't forget to dress up in period clothing and take a picture.
A historic house where Jane spent the last years of her life writing the world renowned books. Step back in time and catch a glimpse of her life and absorb it, highly recommended for Jane Austen fans, Pop into the cafe for a coffee and a bite to eat opposite her house.
Very well organised and well maintained historic House displaying items that take you in the glorious past during Jane Austen's time spent in the house. The gardens surrounding the property are kept immaculate. However, the entry fee at PS13.50 seems a bit inflated.
A must visit for any Jane Austen fan. The house is beautifully looked after and it was really interesting to find out more about Jane and her family. There were dressing up clothes, which the kids loved and they were able to wear them while looking around. This made the experience more fun for them and it was a real treat. Had a lovely picnic in the garden and played some garden games. They even supplied blankets, deck chairs and cushions to sit on. The staff were very knowledgeable and very friendly. Plus the ticket is automatically an annual pass, which is a bonus and we will definitely be back. Really recommend.
